engine knock? Sounds like valves to me, but need opinions please!

the sound seems higher up for sure, I checked the valves real quick and they were at .013 on that cylinder on the exhaust cam so it seems like that part is good, I haven't even downloaded a manual yet but I'm going off of .006 and .010" like a bunch of quad motors and bike motors seem to be...

engine knock? Sounds like valves to me, but need opinions please!

I hope that's not what it is but if that's the case I'll just have to do what it takes to fix it. I'll check the valve lash and do a compression check and see what it looks like. Thanks for the replies so far guys!

engine knock? Sounds like valves to me, but need opinions please!

haha! I'm not scared, I was only revving up a little bit. If it blows up that leaves me with an excellent excuse to jump into the big bore, stroker, high compression, big cams, headporting, intake, exhaust, etc. etc. that I tell my wife all my other toys require. She is convinced that...

that's the part I wanted people to hear for sure, on quick accel and decel the sound lags behind it. I was thinking loose timing chain or loose valves myself. Or something loose in the valvetrain.

engine knock? Sounds like valves to me, but need opinions please!

It could be, I guess I just need to tear into it and see what I find. I was just hoping someone would jump on here and know exactly what it is and tell me right where to go lol. It could probably use a valve adjustment anyway, I just hate doing shim and buckets, I've gotten too lazy playing...

OK will do, right after recording the noise of the engine I used a cut off chunk of broom handle for a stethoscope and checked the knocking sound/ feel that way, the most noise was coming from the right rear cylinder on the exhaust cam, so I'm in that area for sure. I pulled the valve cover off...

engine knock? Sounds like valves to me, but need opinions please!

Hi guys, newbie here. I just bought a vmax last weekend from a guy that thought the crank bearings were bad. Listening to it I think it's more of a topend/ valve adjustment issue. This is my first vmax so any input is highly appreciated! I want to square this away before starting the mods...

I'll do some checking and thanks again gentlemen. I'm going to post that video link of my vmax running just to see if it works here, I'm hoping it just needs valve adjustments, let me know what you think, thanks. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fdT1W2ahSIc

Awesome guys, thanks for the welcome and the responses. My center stand is already gone so I'm guessing it's had an exhaust system on it already. I want a full system for sure and whatever is top tier, along with the other parts. I assumed all the other stuff would come down to a handful of...

Hey guys, another f*%@$ing newbie here, I finally bought a vmax after thinking I'd like to have one for the last 20 some years. Just bought a 1986 for cheap with a knocking motor, hopefully I'll get that ironed out right away and on to the mods. I've been on bikes forever and really been into...
