Cool bike!! I live well outside Vmax country and I think I have the only 1st gen in town. This sight has been my sole source of info and almost all of the parts. Its the best site of it's kind.

Welcome!

Hello all, I became a '96 Vmax owner just about a month or so ago. Ive been getting it ready for some good seat time in the spring. I live in the high country so not a lot of winter riding around here. It is a good time for upgrades and fixes though. When i got the bike my clutch didnt seem to engage all the way.( it would clunk and jump forward when putting in gear with clutch lever pulled) I changed the fluid which was very grey and water like. when I went for a test ride it rode fine until I stopped with clutch lever in and it died. Put in neutral and fired up and idled. Put in gear 1st and dies. Now I have rebuilt the master cylinder and the slave cylinder.(both needed it. ) I still have the same issue. I can hear some noise when bike is running and clutch lever is out which goes away when I squeeze the lever. I will be digging into it again this weekend for shift segment update and to take a look at the internals. I would be very greatful for any thoughts or advice.

Noise in neutral while the engine is running seems to be the nature of the beast. It's coming from the clutch, and is nothing to worry about. When you pull in the lever, the noise going away is also normal. These clutch cylinders can be a bear to bleed out. I've got a MityVac which I used to do clutch and brake bleeds. Sounds like there is still a bit of drag in the clutch - not fully disengaging.
I'd try a careful bleeding of the line again, see if it helps.

And - Welcome to the Forum!

Hello All,

I currently have a VStar 1100, but I want a VMAX very badly. I am trying to find out the pros and cons between the Gen1 and Gen 2 VMAX. Also looking to discover what upgrades I should or should not do.

Thanks
Jon

Hello everyone,
I ride and race a 1700, I hope to learn and make a few friends on here. My bike has the following mods, Akra de-cat ti pipes, Akra cans, air box de-restricted, K&N air filter and oil filter, DD clutch, 240 rear and Gurued Nash Flash.
I am getting more involved in racing, for 2018 sponsored by BST.
All the best,
zen

Greetings. My name is Darin. I just purchased a 99 Vmax, I have been wanting one for ever. I look forward to looking at the valuable information here, and when I do something to be proud of, other than just buying a new2me bike, I will be glad to post. Of course, I could not buy anything perfect, so I am already tearing into the electrical system to fix a few things and upgrade/improve a few things.

Regards,
Darin

hi all another newbie here. I'm 56 and in uk not a vmax owner yet .been saving and ready to buy one now. currently got a Suzuki 1200 bandit but always wanted a gen1 vmax so hopefully you guys will put me in the right direction. am currently looking at a 98 with 24k miles at a Yamaha dealer for £3500. and a 05 20th edition model with44k miles from a small dealer for £3000. both serviced bit of history on the 98 one but none on the 05. they are both located too far from me so will have to realy on what they say. which one would I go for? what do I need to look out for problem wise if any. thanks sam

Hi.
I'm from Italy. Sorry for not introducing myself as soon as I registered but most of the time I browse the web using my mobile phone and it's a pain to write messages with this devices ( you know, the "auto-corrector" most of the time change words due to ita-eng keyboard and what happens is that I have to fight with it....sooner or later I will throw it in the garbage and switch back to my old motorola starTac...)
Aniway, here I'm :) . I'm old enough to tell you that I've been wishing for this bike for almost 30 years and finally purchased a black 96 (unfortunately the European model with less HP) some months ago.
This is my childhood dream , and there's no other bike for me. Even the gen2 vmax hasn't the same amount of charisma ( ... I mean, obiouvsly for me ).
we both are old, nasty, not easy to deal with, and with a bad attitude.
Yet there are not many of us around, here in Italy.
Modern bikes are almost perfect, they run like hell ( hey, did you see the H2r? 400Km/h!! what the hell!!!!! ) and are safe , easy to ride and with a mileage more than double if compared to the old gen1 Vmax.
but they didn't , nor will ever have something more important : character.
Is not about speed, or how fast you drive: is the difference between a bike that wants to run faster and a crazy crotch-rocket that wants to rip the road with the rear tire.
ok , I admit, I'm in love with it.
Well, there are not much more about me that I think could be interesting.
Working with PC to live, pretty hate my job, having fun with long range shooting , zero time left for sleep...you know, the same as 90% of guys in my age.
As for my Max, as soon as I take it back to my place I started to swap things to make it better, but due to lack of time I still have a huge amount of work to do.
Ahm, just forgetting ; thank you guys!
I made a set of COP following your suggestions . will post pics as soon as they will be ready to roll.
I'm waiting for a dyna 3000 and still looking for a shindengen 775, but here in EU it's almost impossible to find it at an affordable price.
For sure I can buy it from the US, but it will cost me more than double due to custom fees and shipment.
Also changed both front and read master cylinder with Brembo racing products, and all filters with K&N filters.
since 6 mohts I'm struggling to find an easy way to change coolant hooses but seems that this will be not an easy task.
Why not give the bike to an expert? pretty easy : they ask more money than I can afford, and most important they doesn't know this bike, so since I like to live and walk with both legs I purchased both books ( clymer and Haynes ) and will do by myself for what I can .
Don't get angry for my future questions, It's the first time I try to repair a mororcycle and could make some silly mistakes.
see you around guys.
g

P.S : sorry for my poor english, I'm Italian :) and we usually talks with funny gestures....

Welcome G.

Hi guys. I'm Andy James from a small island called England!
Hoping to pick up my 98 Gen 1 over the next couple of days. She is a Canadian import full power model needing some TLC as the exhaust is blowing and the motor won't run without choke.
These bikes are quite rare over here so I'm looking forward to restoring her to her best and ripping away from the lights! I will post up some pictures when I get the bike home.
