Hi all....just sold my beloved XJR and bought a Max...1988 ...i want to export it and need to find the factory gate price in 1988!....anyone help out there....did you buy a vmax in 1988...how much did you pay less taxes and delivery etc. Any dealers out there who can help...if so would you mail me a letter head with that info...thanks :biglaugh:
 
Not really sure but want to say it's in the $5000-$6000 price range (85 was $5k new if I remember right)
 
Thankyou for the info...id guessed around the 5.5k mark....do you know what tarrifs and purchase tax were levied at that time...i believe Mr Reagan introduced a levy allegedly to assist Harleys...im trying to find the price the dealer paid Yamaha...less transport etc.....thanks again....

Welcome to the Vmax, and to the forum both will get into your blood. Original tires! Remember you asked the question. Replace all the fluids, oil, final drive, brake fluid, clutch, and fork oil. Yes the tyres are shot. Hard as bricks at best. This is a short list for me since I don't know how the bike has been stored. I assume it looks brand new, but I am only guessing? I also assume the brakes are in good working condition?

OK, that should help you get started.

Popular mods are replacement of any components showing leakage, wear, deterioration, etc., which is really maintenance. Still, sometimes you can significantly improve your enjoyment and the performance by careful choice of replacement parts. For example:


  • rear shocks are often replaced and have a great effect on handling. Performance Suspension in the stock 13" o.c. measurement has a lot of options, the 412's are OEM quality, and then you can move upwards in price from there in their line. There are other sellers, most are $$$.
  • people who like turning corners often make the switch to radial tires. There is no 15" motorcycle radial rated for 149 mph. Don't even think about the 'dark side,' running a car radial on your bike. All it should take is a pic seeing someone cornering on one of those, seeing the edge only (!) of the car tire making contact w/the road, while the rest of the contact patch is nowhere the road.
  • ClickHandler.ashx

Coil -over-plug conversions are popular, beware the early (to 1989) CDI boxes, which need a resistor in the circuit to present to the CDI box the correct resistance to operate without having electrical issues down the road. The main convenience is that if you have a bad coil, it's a 5 minute repair to fix. Try taking a look at the front coils' location, and then read the service manual section on their replacement.

Four-into-four exhaust slip-ons will look 'cool,' but will cost you horsepower. They do not scavenge as-well as the stock exhaust. Getting additional power usually is a matter of correctly-tuning a Dynojet Stage 7 jet kit, or opting for Sean Morley's muscle jet kit, and getting a complete freer-flowing exhaust, which usually means 'louder.' If you live where there are vehicle equipment checks, this may not be an option because of the loudness, and product-approval requirements. There are other jet kit sellers, too. FYI, you don't need to remove the VBoost as the Dynojet instructions say, you can tune the carbs to still work w/the VBoost. That's what I have.

OK, that should keep you busy for the winter months. Sounds like you got a good slightly-used bike. I'd be careful about changing gears from 1-2 gear. Rounding the shift dogs and the mating openings will make you 'gain' an extra, unwanted neutral, as the bike jumps out of gear under hard acceleration.

I'm adjacent to where the Sturgis Motorcycle ralley happens, very target rich environment. :punk:

I'm not sure if your one of those street light to street light guys but it's a fun bike for this. Most of the guys that have been doing bikes for awhile know a Vmax on sight, probably the very distinctive scoops. The younger HD guys are most likely to fall prey and when it's bike season there are always those that are itching to chew up a "Jap bike" in front of his friends. Fun Fun Fun!

I have done many of the mods listed above, very happy with them, but I will just say from my experience the most important thing you can do to add enjoyment to the bike is make sure its jetted and dialed in correctly, and there is plenty on that as you dig deeper. Congrats on your purchase, I look forward to seeing pics!! Welcome to the forum.

I bought my coil over plugs conversions from a guy on facebook and they don't have resistors-seem to work great.

I do have several of the sets made by Gannon. Top notch. Excellent quality, and bought them thru Sean. If people are interested in COPS though, make certain that you buy them from a reputable person. There are unscrupulous sellers out there that offer "magic" COPS. Increases in HP, gas mileage.....etc. Your not gonna go past your baseline.

No sir, it does not.

One of the funny parts of it is the big twin really runs out of steam at around 6000 rpm -/+ 500, which is right before Vboost kicks in and the Vmax starts to really scowl. A guy that knows how to tune and ride his HD may even come off the line with you but after a few bike lengths it gets really one sided. :clapping:

It's not his opinion it's a fact. Replacing proper functioning stock coils with cops adds no horsepower regardless of who assembled them. Any claims of adding horsepower over proper functioning stock coils is BS. The attached pic is what how the unscrupulous seller that advertises more horsepower assembles his cops.

After research they look the same as bird-of-preys'.
I've also been reading how gannons' resistors have burned holes in the seats and others that overheated and melted their wiring.
So the guys name is danny?
I haven't had any problem at all with mine and it does run better.
Everyone else on there says the same thing.
 
Every time this comes up I feel the need to clarify. I have never told my customers that the COP mod is going to add HP or may any real improvements when compared to a good functioning stock part. The key to that comment is good functioning. Many of these bikes are ageing and coils/wires are starting to work at less then optimum. So, swapping the parts out "seems" like it's giving you more power.

As far as quality. I think some of the other guys have started recently using all new components though I have not bought a set to take apart and verify. I know that a customer in the last 6-8 months did not have this new stuff?

Gannons resistors or anyone else's for that matter create heat as part of the increased resistance. No way around it. I know of only one resistor failing and that was from a poorly routed cable that got pinched in the seat. Wasn't too big a deal in the long run. I think I had to replace another cable for one that had pulled the connection out of the waterproof terminal end. The customer could have easily fixed it but it was even easier to swap him out and let us fix it.

Also, I know that Gannon does not use about 20% of the coils he gets due to not passing his quality controls. They are fully disassembled, sonic cleaned, assembled and then tested. These ones he doesn't use would likely be ok but just aren't up to his standards. The wiring DOES matter as to which is positive and negative to get proper operation (it will work backwards but not as efficiently).

There isn't a lot of markup by the time he buys the coils, gets all new parts, and puts the labor into it. It's also a much nicer and more professional appearing part and not just covered up with 2 rolls of duct tape and split loom.

I have definitive proof there is no added horsepower with dyno results including testing a set of his. No his name is not Danny he was being referred to in the post.

I can confirm that asherc has a lot of testing on the dyno documented. I bought my bike from him and he has very comprehensive spreadsheets on everything tested and how they compare. When i bought mine he dynoed it while I was there just to show me that my bike was exactly as advertised. He has dyno runs with and without cops and there is no increase in HP.
