Yeah, I've read about those Bill. All the mistique probably comes from classified, experimental aircraft and the test results/failures resulting from those programs. There's undoubtedly all sorts of weird looking things in the air around Area 51, with a few probably coming to unfortunate endings in the sand.
Wouldn't take too many of that type of incident to get the tin foil hat wearers worked up into a frenzy! And, of course, the Chamber of Commerce in Roswell has no problem with it either!
