I just picked up an 86 a few weeks ago. It runs great on reserve, but it dosent get fuel on main any ideas would be helpful.

If the problem remains after testing/fixing the switch, the sensor in the tank might need to be looked at. Is the fuel light working?

Couple of things can cause it to not pump while in the normal position (which is to the right)

1) Low Fuel. Of course this is a no brainer. The light should be glowing which in turn causes the fuel pump to turn off.

2.) Bad light. If the bulb is burned out the system does not work properly. When cranking the bike the fuel and oil light should illuminate until you let off the starter button. You can swap the oil and fuel bulbs if you need to check or eliminate that from being the issue.

3.) Wrong Gauge Cluster. Though all years appear to be able to be swapped (and physically fit and wires plug in) there are differences in the way everything grounds. If for some reason the cluster was swapped (maybe for a newer nicer looking one) then you would have needed to swap back the original wiring.
