Hi everyone. Im new here and i already love the information thats here. I bought a 1988 vmax a month ago with 79k kilometers on it. Since then ive done an oil change, coolant flush, water pump seal replacement and drain cock o-ring replacement (leaking), replaced the push throttle cable (snapped at the handlebar), and fitted a K&N air filter.
My current problem is the high idling, if i read correct the idle speed should be 1000-1100 depending on personal taste i suppose. When i start the bike up it idles fine (1050). when i give it some throttle while its warming up, it will sit at 2200 for about 10 seconds then go back to normal again, that i could deal live with. the main problem is when the bike warms up and the exhaust warmup smoke disappears. the bike will automatically go to 2900 rpm and creep on creeping itself to about 3300 before i decide to shutoff the bike.

I have done some troubleshooting that involved checking all air lines for fitment, throttle cable size, basically everything i have done to the bike and have hit a wall.:bang head: the only thing i can think of is that it may need a tune because of the air filter (i hope), otherwise im going to send it to a bike shop but they charge 50-100 for deliver/ pickup charges and 110 an hour. just want some help or insight so i can avoid the payment.
Notes:
-currently in kelowna canada, cant ride due to poor road conditions, so i cant test ride it, just idling and revving.
-i dont have enough information about how it was idling before because i bought it a month ago and quite honestly cant remember how it idled back then, all i do know it was fine enough for me to buy it.
- i am an aerospace maintenance engineer apprentice, so shoot technical terms or maintenance stuff at me, if i dont get it ill ask.
- if more information is needed, ill try to provide the best i can granted i can provide it.

Thanks everyone.

If you are using the choke it will do this (idle creeping up), think of the choke as a fuel enrichment lever which does when the bike is warming up. Mine does it less in the warmer weather. But as Dave suggested a carb sync may solve some issues regarding irregular idle issues.

Carb synch first. I dig deeper, but I'm heading out to ride in a minute.

Dang, a night time ride in February? :punk:
It was 45* here today but no getting out Redbone for all the snow in the way still! I bet we lost 2-4" of depth today but there is still a good 2.5' - 3' of snow on the ground. Better weather for the 200+ :Snowmobile: I saw at the casino's and at the trailheads today! I can still hear them running up the on the hill when I was outside a while ago.

Haven't had a chance to work on it since I posted this (work farewell party) but I'll try messing around with it tmrw if I can find my carb sync rig. I also read up that the idle could of been set at cold idle, meaning the previous owner in this case

Thanks for the help. i looked at the choke and noticed that the rod was a little bent out of shape, re-bent it and now the choke works properly and the idle problems have seemed to disappeared.

Glad you found the problem-Cracked rubber boots on the intakes will cause a high idle also.
