G'day,

Always loved the VMax and finally picked one up last week - a 1996 model.

A number of cosmetic things that need doing and also, seems to be dropping a cylinder and is burbling along when cruising... the joys of old bikes 😀

Looking forward to scouring these pages for much needed help and advice - thanks in advance.

Cheers,
Phil

P.s. I'm actually from Scotland originally so have no business saying g'day 🤣

If you're OK w/CV carbs servicing, you probably have a plugged pilot jet. These bikes don't like sitting idle for months/years w/ethanol 10%/ gasoline in 'em.

Look on here for info on cleaning out your pilot jets, I don't recommend the peashooter or the shotgun methods, they sometimes work, but I'd recommend pulling the carbs off (disconnect the cables at the plastic junction box) and splitting the carbs into two pairs, and then removing the float bowls. That gives you access to the jet block, which contains two brass jets in each float bowl. You have to remove the two screws for each jet block, to access the brass jets behind the rubber plugs.

The float bowls and the CV caps use security screws. The above thread has info on a source for the hex bits you need to remove them, or use a Dremel cut-off disc to make a slot to remove them, a straight-jaw Vise-Grip can also remove the screws w/the security design.

Spend time reading about the carbs, and take a dive in.
