    battery eater

My 06 sits in the basement for long periods of time (6 months), under cover, with no tender, and fires right up. You need to do some investigating. As FM said, check the Rectifier/Regulator for proper output. It may be putting out too much voltage while running and "cooking" your battery. It...

Anyone know what this might be for?

Its a vboost switch. Not sure what type though. It doesn't look like a simple on/off. It looks more line a on @ stock RPM and on @ some other RPM.

Anyone know what this might be for?

It is not stock. If you pull the faux tank cover (no tools) and the scoop (2 screws) you can take a look and figure it out in a few seconds. I'd guess its a simple kill switch for vboost being it is on the left side. It could be a fan switch but the fan controls are on the right side of the...

Best 1st gen year for reliability and ease of maintence

Sounds like a master cylinder or slave cylinder issue. Seems to me the slave goes more often. No big deal if thats all there is to it.

Long Distance Rides - What to watch out for??

If I was going for a 3,000 mile trek on my vmax, I'd change the oil and hit the road. Not much to worry about pending the bike is properly maintained. 35,000 miles on the ODO wouldn't concern me at all pending the bike is taken care of.

The OIL thread. All oil related questions here.

There is nothing wrong with Yamalube. It's just overpriced. It's not any better for your machine than a lower cost oil with the proper rating. Some folks don't live close to a yamaha dealer and don't want to order online so its much easier to go to the auto parts store or walmart and buy an...

How much will come out when removing the oil filter

Depends on how fast you are at changing it out. Maybe a little. Maybe a lot. I don't think anyone here will be able to give you an accurate amount. The safe bet is replace the filter and the oil so you know whats in there but, it doesn't sound like that is what you want to hear. If you want to...

    86´ bike -carb hybrid.

Sounds like your running a DynoJet Stage 7 carb setup with the OEM airbox? I'd look into getting a new airbox lid from Sean Morley. It will fit the OEM airbox but allow use of a large, flat, air filter. You need more air to continue with the stage 7. Not everyone feels the need to drill out...

'88 V-Max starts only with choke, revs high for 1 second, then dies.

Idle can be hanging because of a lean condition/air leak. Idle can be hanging because of a synch issue. Start the bike, let it run with choke. Back off the choke and turn up the idle speed if bike wants to die. Just enough to keep it running. Synch again and see if you can get it to idle down...
