    1st Vmax Build

Some upgrades include; Progressive fork springs Progressive rear shocks I polished the head a bit (just got rid of all the crusty black powdercoating) I rewired the entire bike Fork brace I modified the frame to stiffen it up a bit Stage 7 jet kit I sent the original UFO exhaust back to UFO and...

    1st Vmax Build

I build motorcycles in my spare time. I bought a 1989 vmax about 4 years ago for my brother, after riding it once I decided he doesn't deserve a bike like that. I rode it for awhile and then laid it down on coming off a ramp on the highway (it's not a sportbike). It sat in the garage for about a...

Frame mod I saw on the internet

I saw a similar frame mod on the internet and decided to give it a go. Forgive the crappy welds, I had a buddy clean them up before painting the frame. I haven't gotten the bike running yet so I can't say if it does anything but it was a pretty easy thing to do if you have that part of the...

Can the oil switch trip the starter circuit cutoff? If the starter relay were faulty wouldn't it not work at all? I guess after jumping the relay and holding the starter button I am completing the circuit?

    Starting Issue

Miles, I bypassed the starter circuit cutoff system by connecting a wire from the blue/white pin on the starter button directly to the starter relay blue/white pin....still the same. Gonna try deleting the fail safes next. It's odd that holding the starter button down and jumping the relay...

    Starting Issue

I haven't asked for help besides posts. I am past pride on this one, I just want the bike to run. I bought a running 85 vmax and switched out the components from that bike one by one - still couldn't find the issue. (at least I got a vmax to ride till I get this one going) So if there is...

Does anyone know any Vmax electrical experts within a couple hours of DC, I am ready to give up and take it to a pro.

    Starting Issue

Miles, what's left of the stock wiring harness is original to the motor which is 89, I replaced part 41r-83350-71-00 officially called the "flasher relay assembly" but it seems that relay also controls the starter circuit cut off system. As far as I can tell it looks like the neutral...

    Starting Issue

I guess my question really is; If the issue occurs when I press the starter button, then logically it has to be something between the button and the starter relay. If I have changed everything with known good parts between the starter button and the starter relay, then what else could be...

    Starting Issue

Over the past 3 years I rebuilt my 89 Vmax top to bottom, after everything was bolted on/plugged back in, I went to start the bike and ran into a problem. All lights come on, fuel pump runs, but when I press the starter button nothing happens. The headlight turns off (signals and tail stay on)...

    Rerouting Wire Harness

I would have to agree with Miles on this one, if your current harness does not have issues - leave it wrapped. If you are forced to unwrap it you may see things like this - The corrosion on the electrical tape (not heat shrink) covering these crimped connections was something like dried...

    What does this diode do

^ John is absolutely right. I've seen that post before but didn't put it together.

Confirm proper starter relay test procedure

Can anyone confirm the proper way to test a starter relay? Yamaha manual states disconnect starter relay, probe blue/white wire coming from the relay - should test 12V. Can anyone with a working relay confirm this? Thanks.

    Random Electrical Issue

Before I start spending money on new parts I figured I would ask if anyone has found a solution for this problem; 1989 Vmax 1988 Wiring Harness I turn the main switch and stop switch to on positions, everything is working properly (all indicator lights come on, fuel pump clicks, 41-R relay...

    Measuring Valve Clearances

A quick websearch has yielded this; http://www.pcwracing.net/instructions/Valve%20Spring%20Instructions.pdf Don't know who did this write up (they are probably on this forum), his method is somewhat different from the Yamaha manual but very well written and with good pictures. If you look...

    Measuring Valve Clearances

Sorry fellas, went a little heavy on the sauce last night and forgot all about this, tonight I will break out the camera and take pictures of exactly what I'm talking about, before I cover it up and bring this beast to life. If it works either way then I guess it doesn't really matter, but...

    Measuring Valve Clearances

Cam lobes are facing up but more towards each other, definitely not directly up. I will take a picture when I get home and post the difference. hoo·li·gan noun \ˈhü-li-gən\ : a usually young man who does noisy and violent things as part of a group or gang
