    Rim striping

Interesting. I always thought they were painted on by hand, spin the wheel and hold a paint brush in a steady hand. (I read that in the olden times,as recently as the 80s, Rolls Royces were hand painted, no brush strokes visible. It wad a skilled job requiring a year or more apprenticeship...

1990 Gen 1 - sudden power loss and white exhaust smoke on left side

Were you able to identify what the white smoke was? Could be unburnt fuel or steam? Have you checked the coolant level in the header tank? If it has gone down and steam was coming out of the left exhaust then I would point at a blown head gasket front left, which has a lower CR than the...

    Randomly dying at operating temp

Let me ask you this. When you were working on your bike, when you looked around you, did you see me there? In other words, we on this forum are trying to help out remotely without seeing the actual problem, for all I/we know there could be fuel pissing out of one of the carbs that is obvious...

    Randomly dying at operating temp

How do you know the bowls are full? From what you say, it sounds like the fuel pump is unable to keep up with demand, the fact that it looks new doesn't mean its working properly. Have you check the fuel filter - there oughta be one before the fuel pump. Also as you plan to do, you need to...

    Plug ID Please

It's seems to be a BMW part, so not fitted by Yamaha, hence it is reasonable to assume that one of the previous owners installed it. What it is for is anyone's guess but that can be narrowed down by following the wires. It's probably ignition switched 12v power for something like a satnav.

    Plug ID Please

Further searching indicates it is used as sensor connector on BMW cars. E. G. Temperature Sensor, air bag occupancy etc. Stick the above number into ebay.

2004 ran fine until parked, wouldn't restart, slow to turn over..

????? Battery voltage will drop when not being charged, also when ignition is on as headlamp + other components draw power. To measure if the battery is being drained, you connect the meter between battery and lead to measure current. Going back to your first post, the engine turned over...

    Puzzled.

Good point about the followers. I've not been under the cover, will need to check the manual to figure out if a broken valve will show up any differently. Not sure but if the valve head and stem is inside the cylinder, then nothing is holding the spring in place so the follower will be up...

2004 ran fine until parked, wouldn't restart, slow to turn over..

It does sound like the battery is fine but..... ....... you say it's 2 years old - did you fit it yourself and is it correct capacity? There was a post recently where a bike had starting issues, turned out the previous owner fitted an undersized battery sitting on some padding to be at same...

    Puzzled.

Other possibility is for a spark plugs to fall apart, or something dropped in via carbs through the inlet. You're not missing an air box screw or similar? I know space is tight but can the cam covers be removed with the engine in place? I'm sure it will be worth it when fixed...... in 2024.

    Puzzled.

I'm not convinced something has dropped in a cylinder. Valves are immensely strong, If they are to fail, I'd would expect that to be at high rpm, not when cranking..... but we shall see. I would suggest having another look at the work you did on the starter clutch, perhaps removing it to see...

    At a loss

I would guess those 2 connectors would be for the brake light. First step is remove the saddle and check the fuses.

What is wrong with this picture?

I would expect to see an exhaust on that side, looking hard doesn't look like there is one on the other side.

    Puzzled.

This is going from bad to worse. To summarise. Engine wouldn't turn over as the starter cable was not connected to the starter solenoid. Once that was fixed, engine turned over but would not fire, testing the coil, leads and plugs pointed to a failed ignition unit. During these tests...

    How much?!?!?!?

108 k in 2006 is equivalent to 150 k now. I estimate 20k for parts, most would need to be bespoke machined. 3 months labour, thats another 30 k. Aiming for 20% profit, it would need to go under the hammer for 156 k. It needs someone like J Leno to be in the auction toom.

    Front tire life.

That's the story to tell if the wife. I reckon owning 1 bike is cheaper. Having 4 used in rotation means consumables are replaced later than sooner so will have gone up in price. Also the manufacturers want you to replace engine oil, brake fluid and coolant after a number of years...

    Slow '96 VMax??

I would suggest figure out the problem rather than remove and overhaul parts at random. If say the problem is due to a faulty coil, then a carb overhaul ain't gonna fix it.

    How much?!?!?!?

I'm not convinced they are unique but certainly rare. (FYI Its founder William Montgomery was an innovator and is credited with the invention of the sidecar.) One sold for £ 108 k in 2006 but if your wallet is not as deep, you can buy a 1:9 scale model for £ 600. This is how it may look...
