    Balancer Shaft Alignment

    Thanks for your help!

    Balancer Shaft Alignment

Oh, okay...so on closer inspection the "J" mark on the tooth (red arrow) is not the timing mark, but the punch on the gear (green arrow) IS the timing mark?

    Balancer Shaft Alignment

I cannot find that instruction in the manual...are you referencing the Yamaha Factory Service Manual? Here's what I'm seeing: and from another version of the Yamaha Factory Service Manual: Unfortunately it's difficult to see the pictures. I was hoping for a tooth and root marked, but...

    Balancer Shaft Alignment

The picture in the publicly available manual is not very clear. I'm trying to align the balancer shaft and crankshaft, but unfortunately they both indicate a specific tooth instead of a tooth and root. Can someone verify whether this alignment is correct, or whether I have it one tooth off?

Parts Wanted Gen 1 valve spring seats

Super appreciate it, but I should update this thread. I just opted to buy a whole head assembly from ebay. Its coming with a set of shims that might come in handy and that plastic coolant tube that fits in the middle…no idea what condition that part is in, but one of my originals isn’t in the...

Parts Wanted Gen 1 valve spring seats

The valve springs seats keep the springs from wearing into the aluminum of the pocket. #3 in the diagram.

Parts Wanted Gen 1 valve spring seats

Anyone happen to have a spare set (8) of valve spring seats? I some how managed to lose a set from my ‘85 restore project. Only thing I can think of is that I must have missed removing them from the head prior to having the paint stripped. They’re probably sitting at the bottom of a chemical...

New Inhabitant to the Flanigan Garage

You effectively stole that. Nice work! Looks just like mine!

My old Vmax is up for sale

FYI...I sold my '88 in not nearly as good condition as this one for $3K. It sold quick, so maybe it was a bit low.

Parts Wanted 1st Gen Alternator Cover Wanted

I appreciate the advice...and normally I'd try to strip it and fill the pits with JB weld, but I powder coated this one in my early stages of learning the craft, and I mistakenly thought (hoped) that the powder coat would effectively hide the pits. I was very wrong. Since 2019, the active...

Parts Wanted 1st Gen Alternator Cover Wanted

Looking for a replacement alternator cover. Mishap with the paint stripper left pits in my original '85 alternator cover. Anyone have a spare they're willing to part with? I shouldn't use this one on my '85 restoration project. Thanks for your help!

Motorycle For Sale 1988 Vmax for sale - Iowa - SOLD

This is a 1988 model year that I've owned and ridden for the past 3 years. I bought it to ride while I performed a full restoration on my 1985 Vmax, but now need to part with as riding it is keeping me from getting the '85 done. This bike is mostly stock with some upgrades and replacements...

    85- 5000 miles

Beautiful bike! Curious about the side covers. My '85 has the "vmax" embossed in the side covers instead of the raised lettering I see in your pictures. I've always thought this was the hallmark of a true '85, but now I've seen several people pictures of '85s with the raised lettering. Can...

My pilot jet cleaning tool. Picture.

I use a ultrasonic extensively to clean carburetors, but often still need to use a "poke" tool of some sort to clear the pilots. A strand from appropriately sized stranded hook-up wire usually does the trick.

Engine Powder Coat - Match for Yamaha Low Gloss Black?

Thanks for the link...looks like this is an area that needs further exploration. I'll try the semi-gloss to see if its a better match. I'm not hoping to match exactly, but it'd be nice to be close.

Engine Powder Coat - Match for Yamaha Low Gloss Black?

Correction...I guess the low gloss black was for the wheels. There doesn't seem to be any reference for the engine paint color? For sure, the Eastwood high gloss black powder that I've done a few parts with is too glossy. Maybe I'll just go for a semi-gloss. I can attest that scraping powder...

Engine Powder Coat - Match for Yamaha Low Gloss Black?

Anyone found a good match for the '85 (and later models) engine paint "Yamaha Low Gloss Black" in powder coat? I recently realized that Yamaha didn't use the same black paint on all of their engines, and I've mistakenly used high gloss black on several parts. I'd like to start over with a...

Question on $ to order parts vs sending carbs out to get cleaned/rebuilt

I've had great luck rebuilding carbs with the "soft" parts that come with the relatively cheap kits off ebay. I've done two sets of Vmax carbs now using the gaskets and o-rings with no issues. While you can't go wrong with genuine Yamaha parts, I've found the gaskets and o-rings from these...
