    A/f screw extraction results

I'm a little late to the party on this one, but for anyone who reads it in the future... I was able to keep my drill centered using a 1/4" plastic nipple for automotive vacuum hose. The screw then came right out with a square-type extractor. See my post with a pic here...

    Dodged a bullet..............

I had a similar metallic rattle when cold at idle; I traced mine to the exhaust at the right rear cylinder head. When I removed it, I found that the gaskets had been compressed enough from the back-and-forth of the slightly loose pipe that they were junk. I got new ones from bikebandit and...

    Cracking down on novelty helmets

A few quotes here that bring up a question I've had for a long time, but I lack the data to find an answer. Using valid statistics, I'd like to know who costs more in "long term care societal costs" - helmeted or helmetless riders. I live in AZ, where helmets are optional. My anecdotal...

Fix the fuel pump every few days?

Sellers on ebay seem to think their salvage pumps are worth nearly as much as a new pump from Yamaha, so if I have to replace the thing it probably won't be with one of those. I'm thinking about making a new rubber diaphragm as a trial the next time I pull the pump apart... just have to come up...

Fix the fuel pump every few days?

Last year, after many years of trouble-free operation, my fuel pump started the continuous clicking when the key was turned on. I found the fix here on the forum (What to do when your fuel pump clicks like a SOB) and tried it. The first time I did it, it worked for several months, then started...

    Seeking Arizona Vmax Riders

Thanks, Ken. I have one with a few mods, and I've seen a guy in Gold Canyon running errands on a bone stock Gen 1. (I couldn't even hear it running when I tried to follow him in my car to chat with him about the bike.) I'll check out the facebook group.

    Odyssey battery

I'm a couple of years into my second one, after buying the first in 2000 or 2001. I'm reminded how much I like it every time one of the other bikes won't start if I don't remember to put it on the tender once a week or so (even when they're ridden almost daily). The Vmax with its Odyssey just...

    Radial tire brand recommendations

I have the Michelin Pilot Road 3s on front and rear, but I've never had other radials to compare them to. (And the handling of radials is simply too different from the handling of the old bias ply tires to compare the PR3s to the ME880s that I removed from the V-Max.) At the same time I...

Took a busa for a squirt

I have both in the garage ('99 Hayabusa and '85 V-Max with Kerker & Stage 7). Honestly, I find them both about equally as fun - just different from each other. I'll usually ride the Max for a few days, then switch out and ride the Busa for a while. I'm 6'5", and I personally find the...

    Beware of LeatherUp.com

Guy I work with ordered an Xelement jacket from LeatherUp a few weeks ago. So far he's still happy with it and still recommending the place to everyone else (we all ride at work).

    New radials on the '85.

This morning on the way to work I kept trying to upshift, only to find myself already in 5th gear. I'm guessing my ear is detecting higher rpms than I'm used to.

    New radials on the '85.

You know, I hadn't even paid attention to that. I've been so busy feeling out the tires and watching how I ride (I'm still under 100 miles) that I missed watching for something so basic. I'll have to monitor that in the future. I went with the "standard" 5.5-inch conversion they do, as...

    New radials on the '85.

Back in 2007 or so, I bought a rear wheel on ebay and had Kosman do the 17" conversion, but I've never gotten around to putting a tire on it... the ME880s that were on the bike seemed to wear so well, it just never bacame a priority. A nail in the tire on the Hayabusa finally forced me to buy...

Boy did I screw up. Could use some ideas.

Tip: Find something to go over the drill bit to keep it exactly centered in the bore. I found this vacuum line fitting in my toolbox that worked perfectly. Once you've drilled into the screw a little ways, you may have some luck with a screw extractor tool. I chose this one as I didn't want...

    85 fuel pump issues

Welcome, Dean. I'm surprised nobody has jumped in on this one yet. I don't have many ideas for you, other than 1) verifying power to the pump while the bike is running (wire a test light across the pump terminals to see if power goes off after the bike is started), or 2) pull the pump apart to...

    Another carb sync question

Depends... one of the installation steps of the stage 7 is to remove the v-boost valve. If this is done, there is no way to sync 1 to 2 or 3 to 4 because the cylinders pull through each of the carbs equally with no v-boost valve to isolate them. Many installers will simply unplug the v-boost...

    Repacking a kerker

Let's hope so... I ordered the packing from the ebay seller in Drew85's post and used it in my Kerkers. I did, after seeing your link. :) Not sure if I did it right, but 1 unit of packing (12" x 24" from that seller) was enough to do both of Kerker cans on my 4-2 exhaust. The 12" width was...

Help again vmax poping at the exhaust

Do a search on here for "carb sync" and read up on it... basically, pull the shiny covers over the intakes, remove the rubber caps from the intake vacuum ports, and hook up the rubber hoses to the gauges - you don't even need any of the included adapters for the VMax. Start the bike, slowly...

Help again vmax poping at the exhaust

Synchronizing can make a huge difference, especially once you've worked on the carbs or had them off the bike. I have this sync tool from Amazon and really like it. 4 gauges with adjustable restrictors at the base of each (just turn the wheel on the stem of each gauge to dampen the...

    oldest surviving vmax....

Hi, long-time reader, finally joined to post. I have 1985 #2048. Originally burgundy, now black. It's had Kerker 4-into-2 pipes since the 90s, and a Stage 7 kit since about 2000. Fat back tire mod in 2003 or so, and now I have the Kosman Racing 17" rear wheel to mount as soon as I buy some...
