So sad to report, 1 less 1st gen VMax in the world.

Terrible thing, but we are all glad you are OK. You are so humble about your custodial obligation. You shouldn't feel that way, but it is refreshing.

    4-5K RPM Stumble -- Stumped

I keep looking for a chance to go the Gilmores. We have a family reunion next month in Saugatuck. My brother-in-law and I are bringing bikes, so maybe we can sneak over there one day. I've owned two of those Yamaha XS750 Triples, one since 1980. My BIL has an XS850 with a storied history. Here...

    "86 won"t rev past 3K

I hired a guy to install wood floors this week. I can't believe his parents named him Ronald McDonald. Funny thing though, I had the wrong phone number for him because there is another Ronald McDonald in town. Maybe they were named before the McDonalds food chain created the Ronald McDonald...

Most aluminum parts have clear coat and they look worse after rubbing with Mothers. The best solution is to remove the clear coat and then polish with a wheel/abrasives or wet sanding. Then the Mothers makes them like a mirror!

Dilemma about selling my 1999 VMax with 5,000 miles on it.

We all appreciate your honesty. I doubt anybody is going to be disappointed that the carbs were worked on once before, so don't sweat it.

Nice to hear your background. Welcome. You would have been 57 when you purchased that almost-new Vmax?

Dilemma about selling my 1999 VMax with 5,000 miles on it.

Your best result would be to find a buyer like the members here in the forum, that can fix the bike themselves. It's a lot of money to have a dealership or motorcycle shop fix the bike. I wonder if the cost to have it fixed "prefessionally" might be more value added by having it fixed. If I...

Not running on all four!! HELP!

In your original post, the bike was running fine, then it abruptly it wasn't running right. It doesn't seem probable the valves would suddenly change. However, I wonder how many miles have passed before the last valve shim. It's doubtful that the valve shim would cause the original problem, or...

clacking noise in middle gear area

Might try rotating the rear wheel on the centerstand (in neutral) to see if you learn anything. Next I would remove the oil pan to see if anything is in there. Then, while the oil pan is off, rotate the transmission parts see what you feel and hear? You can remove the spark plugs to make it...

clacking noise in middle gear area

If there was a loose part, it could jam between the teeth of the gears, and lock it up.

clacking noise in middle gear area

While in neutral, something made the bike move. Ideas: A loose part floating around bounced into the transmission gears? Something in the transmisssion linkage, drum or forks is floating?

    My son’s first bike

When I started riding many moons ago, it took some time for me to instinctively operate the controls like they were an extension of my my mind and my body. At first I had to think what to do, and sometime I was briefly stricken with paralyzing panic. So, when my son buys a bike, I will pray...

    Dangit...

It is sooooo easy to drain the fuel bowls on the Max. I would drain each bowl and look for separated water. What is the Berryman's product and what did you do exactly? Did you add some Berryman's carb cleaner into the gas? This could easily explain your problem.
