    Vmax MPG improvement

Yes if you think about it, your carbs work by vacuum lifting fuel out of the float bowl. The higher the fuel level the easier the fuel will be drawn in - richer.

    New owner from Trail, BC

Welcome. I’m just outside Vancouver and also had an ‘05. Number 1800/2000 which I sold a number of years ago. Now have an ‘89 - also red.

    Ultrasonic Cleaning Solution

I generally soak carb parts in carb cleaner then rinse them off with water then into the ultrasonic with a 10-20% solution of simple green and water, then another rinse in clean water. Blow them out then check all passageways with aerosol carb spray. The simple green does tend to make the zinc...

Parts Wanted WTB: Oem Mirrors 2000

MikesXS has always carried a vMax replica mirror with the correct Yamaha threads. They are probably made by Emgo.

1st Gen V-Max Idle rough when hot

I had a similar problem on a different model where the coil would fail when it got hot. Let it cool of and the bike would run properly again. As mentioned previously the carbs will likely need a going over as well. I have had more than one bike run well cold then not good when hot. Would be in...

    85- 5000 miles

Good plan there James t. I have a bone stock red ‘89 that is in very nice condition and will never be modified in any way, as well as the ‘76 XS650 in my Avatar that I just restored. It has some tasteful bolt-on mods, but is essentially stock and could be easily returned to stock.

Can’t find neutral at a stop.

Try replacing and bleeding the clutch hydraulic fluid. A small air lock could result in the slave cylinder not releasing the clutch fully and having it drag so you can’t find neutral at a stop. (Does the clutch engage with the lever just slightly off the handlebar?) The XS650 was notorious for...

    Voltage Regulator/Rectifier Replacement

My apologies - the Shindengen is a MOSFET type regulator and the stock regulator is apparently an SCR - series type. I don’t want to get into a discussion as to the merits of either type, but the Shindengen is what Triumph used as a warranty replacement for the stock unit and as an upgrade in...

    Voltage Regulator/Rectifier Replacement

I did the Shindengen R/R upgrade on a 2007 Speed Triple. The speedies were known to blow alternators because the stock regulator would run the alternator at 100% all the time and shunt the unneeded power off as heat thru the cooling fins. The Shindengen unit only runs the alternator as hard as...

Getting 170 rear wheel off the bike

I once had to loosen the 4 nuts on the final drive to angle it out of the way a tiny bit.

    Avon or Shinko?

I have a friend that has run older / mismatched tires on his Max. I have chased him on my Max and also on my Z900RS and always been amazed how that sucker sticks to the road in the twisties. And we all know that rears on the Max are changed out way more often than the front, and matched tires...

How to be cheap, yet mobile.

Aww quit your complaining. Here in the Vancouver B.C. area I just paid 2.36 for a litre for ethanol free Chevron 94. You U.S. boys can multiply that by about 4 to get the price per gallon. We have almost always had the most expensive gas in North America. Figure that we live next door to Alberta...

    WHAT ARE YOU LISTENING TO???

Vintage Akai system with cassette, reel to reel and a Luxman turntable. JBL Jubal speakers. An old Sony silver DVD player so I can still use a CD when necessary.

LED headlight 1993 VMax suggestion ?

Before you deface the front of your vMax for about the same amount of money, try an LED lamp. The Car Work one I mentioned or the Auxito that Parm mentioned are both better than the stock halogen. The stock halogen lamp is 55 watts on low, but the LED lamps are far more efficient. Way over...

LED headlight 1993 VMax suggestion ?

Gent, not sure if you were referring to my set-up or Nsubs in the previous post. The lamp I used has a very distinct cut-off on low beam so should not be an issue for oncoming traffic and is way brighter than a stock halogen. It is a good plug-n-play if a guy wants brighter and doesn’t want to...

LED headlight 1993 VMax suggestion ?

One thing to watch out for when buying an aftermarket LED H4 replacement is the actual wattage of the lamp and the output lumens. The replacement bulbs can vary quite a bit, but all are less watts than the halogen lamp. I picked up one off Amazon by Car Work Box. It was 30 watts and over 6000...

    Steering race removal tool

I have just cut a piece of 1/4 X 1” flat bar to fit inside the race and welded it in place. Doesn’t take a huge weld - then tap the flat bar from above. The heat and having something to hit works great. Just be careful not to zap the race into the neck with the welder otherwise the dremel is...

    Japanese import rpm to mph.

Canadian model would give you about 60 MPH / 100 KM/hr at 4000 rpm. Wouldn’t the Virago have a 19” front wheel which would affect the speedo gearing as well?
