Mikes very correct the mechanic can be a great carb guy on other bikes but until he has done several max's he's not your guy! Like mark said bypass that plug if you have the tools to do it and remember some of those wires are stainless so make sure you get a good solder joint.If you dont have a multi meter you can check the stator with a lamp or drop light. This is a/c power so don't let it ground and DON'T touch it...

The rubber cover like sean said is the best and easy way to check the shaft if it is not that put your bke on center stand turn the wheel without the engine running and you should hear a noise (make sure it's in gear) take your oil cap off and see if the clutch basket is spinning. Hope that helps
