V-Max Speed Wobble (ran it up to 115mph and...)

What led to using different settings? Just curious. I just did a 70m ride with wife and the bike is as stable as a rock with the 2 up and extra weight....

Some other observations. Consider these pics. The center shaft is pinned and for a bit, I thought that however unlikely, if the pin had any slop, there could be a problem there but I've moved beyond that thought. I think the center shaft couldn't possibly be a problem and the crown nut and...

V-Max Speed Wobble (ran it up to 115mph and...)

Bearing puller kit made easy work of the wheel bearings. Test rode with the different wheel. The tire definitely appears more true. I can see that when I ride. Bought me just a little more stability, I think. Runs up to 95 were slightly improved. I can try one final thing up front and that...

Another front rim arrived yesterday. I was able to get the old tire off (k591 elite), move the new Shinko off the bent rim and over to this one. Now I have to remove the wheel bearings and use reinstall new ones as well as move my new vented rotors over and then I can try out this different...

What did you do to your Vmax today? Part 2

Those look great. What brand of paint do you like?

Just to be clear, spring pre-load or damping? I tried Progressive 412s but will wait for your testing results. There are definitely more tunable shocks out there than mine...

Most recent set of changes: tighten the steering head bolt a bit more (not the bearing nuts), swap out the front axle, spacer, and speedometer clutch with newer ones. One or more of these changes made a slight but noticeable improvement. I should have another wheel arrive this week, which...

Maybe! On that thought, I looked up pics of the frame on eBay and realized that the right side has a section that is bolted on together. That's another item I plan to check also... the frame bolts.

Brian.... what if you measure the front and rear suspension sag with just you and then with your wife? 2 theories: the extra weight settles it all down, or the steering geometry becomes more stable with the extra suspension sag.... If just a geometry change were to settle it down, one could...

Brian.... I have found exactly the same things! Way back in the beginning of this thread, I discuss pushing forward strongly on the bars to stop the weave. Post #22 of this thread describes a test I have done before many times, which involves giving a heel bump to one of the handlebar grips at...

Can you send pics or send a link to the damper you installed?

Referencing these other posts, as they offer more ideas to try: https://www.vmaxforum.net/threads/steering-head-bearing-condition-and-its-consequences.3827/ Interesting ideas stated: It's possible that the steering head races loosen up and walk wobble at speeds <=40 comes from steering head...

V-Max Speed Wobble (ran it up to 115mph and...)

Thanks guys. It is expensive and time consuming but I don't want to admit defeat. I'm almost out of tactics for the 85 / 40mm front end. Going to replace the wheel, axle, and speedometer clutch next and reassemble. Probably a fork brace too. If nada, I'll fit an ME880 front tire. If nada...

I can't find any obvious issues upon visual inspection. I was hoping to find mismatched damper rods but these have 4 holes each. Springs appear to be the same. One of the bushings isn't quite flat near the joint, along with fork brace / fender mount slop on both sides. That's all I can find...

V-Max Speed Wobble (ran it up to 115mph and...)

I don't know if this is typical of the 85 front fender mount.... the bolts line up but they sure leave a lot of slop between the fork mounts and the brace on both sides...

Progressive fork springs stiffened up the front end but made no difference regarding the wobble at 75 and up. On to other ideas...

So the 5w-20 synthetic and 5.5" spacers puts the sag in a good place and the forks are doing the job now. This made a noticeable improvement and by simple testing means, seems to have raised the wobble onset speed by 10-15mph alone. Too windy to reliably test but it feels much better at freeway...

V-Max Speed Wobble (ran it up to 115mph and...)

Yuck! Looking at things in a positive light..... all of these things I've looked at, mostly one at a time, has let me observe and feel what (if any) difference each change makes on the system. Additionally, it has caused me to find and resolve various (including safety) issues. So this has...

Front forks: how much sag for best damping?

Actually, during my various tests, after changing the oil and restoring fork function, static sag is about right when using the 5.5" spacers. So the video I posted shows too much slop and is, as Steve says, not very relevant. One reason is I am waiting for progressive springs, which will mean...

https://www.sae.org/publications/technical-papers/content/780307/ "From the results it is very clear that the most important parameter affecting stability is lateral stiffness" Gonna take an approach from this point of view and drop in some new progressive springs and start over on front fork...
