Awesome. Thanks for the help.
Got some time after work and had some success. I didn't have a welder so I had to grind with my die grinder.
Having now experienced this, I will recommend the welding method instead. It's too easy to jack up the bearing seats, frame, etc.
When I took off the wheel and forks to relieve the weight on the steering head, and then proceeded to turn the bars, I couldn't believe what it felt like..... a little hard to describe but it felt overtight, NOT smooth, and with a variance when centered versus when turned side to side. It also...
Thanks for the idea. I can probably get a guy over and have it done for maybe $50. Or I have various grinders, including a Dremel somewhere, in which I could cut "dannymax groove" and then push it out with a punch. Come to think of it, $50 is way cheap compared to the hassle of grinding...
So... better late than never I guess.
Fork seals started leaking so I decided it's time to work on the front end. Brakes, master cylinders, fork seals, and steering head.
With the wheel and other stuff off, the steering head bearings felt overtight. Less resistance in the center and more as I...
Anybody out there who is 6 feet tall or more and who is still riding a gen 1 who also has a windshield (not bug shield)? Can you recommend a windshield that will pass the air over the helmet?
Got a leak.
Not opposed to just buying a new master cylinder but if so, can you guys post your favorite option for buying one? For example, here's one at BikeBandit:
$158.95 - https://www.bikebandit.com/oem-parts/1985-yamaha-v-max-1200-vmx12n-front-master-cylinder-2/o/m146947sch254865

Forgot to mention that a buddy riding next to me on a $14k BMW got 57mpg on the same segment.
I have a carb tune but haven't used it yet but the bike is back to tire burning pull...
Just took my first 100 mile ride since cleaning the carbs and getting a new SLA battery from Apex. Half of the ride was 45-55 type riding. On that segment, which included some hefty mountain elevation riding, I got 50mpg!
Can't say I rode it slow (who rides a VMax slow?) on the next hop...
I decided, what the heck, it's been about 9 years since I did anything inside the carbs on my 85 so I yanked the carb bank and proceeded to disassemble and clean. Like last time, I did the repair without breaking apart the carb rack (the rail screws are stuck anyway).
Symptoms were poor idle...
Hello everyone,
I haven't rebuilt the carbs on my 85 for ... I'm guessing 8 years. Bike has been so good to me I haven't had to do much of anything.
However, it's now showing signs of fuel varnish as I haven't been able to ride it enough. Rather than the shotgun fix, I figured I'd tear...
Thanks guys. Is there a diagram/pic of the coolant cap/hose area? I've noted the level when the engine is cold is the same - it's not drawing it back in.
Howdy,
I had to flush the cooling system/radiator etc. I went to refill and noticed that the reservoir was clear full and the coolant isn't being drawn back into the system. I expected a lower system coolant level to cause a drawback of coolant but that doesn't seem to be happening.
What...
I ordered a battery which is similar to / generic of the Panasonic battery listed in the Electrical Section under battery replacement.
When I removed the old one I was surprised to find a wal mart brand SLA. Probably the reason it lasted longer than I thought it should was because it was SLA...
I suspect I have a battery problem. Before I replace it (was considering a Panasonic-type SLA), I would like to get some input from you guys.
First, the bike has run fine for years on this same battery, but this season, the bike has killed a time or two and would not restart due to low battery...
I definitely need to upgrade the riding gear and wear better gear.
Also, in my years of riding, I never encountered the situation I did. The fact that some of you have experienced it already, some more than once, means that I will be looking out for this situation again. Now it's catalogued...
Yup... I guess it was my turn.
Few days ago I was riding on a road I commute 10 minutes on every day. The road has 2 northbound, 2 southbound lanes, and 1 turning lane. I was heading northbound at the 45mph posted speed. Was riding within the inside lane. To my right in the right hand lane, a...
With a few trips into the boost, one 8000+ ft mountain pass, and a 75mph average. Not bad. With 100% freeway riding I think I get closer to 42mpg (IIRC from last year).
