total loss of power at big throttle openings

I promise I really dont have any Keyster parts in my carbs! I am not even sure we can get them in the UK! :-)

total loss of power at big throttle openings

Float levels are within spec. I have discovered tho that some of the clips that go round the rubber carb boots are knackered and dont tighten (I didnt put the bike back together myself) - so air may be being sucked in. Off to automotive suppliers for some new clips....

Mark Yes - done that - caps are fine. Running out of ideas. I have done a sort of test on the fuel pump - thumb over the pipe. It seems to have decent pressure so its not that.

total loss of power at big throttle openings

Yep - carbs will have to be re-synced as they have been off again. Once I get em back on I'll check the float levels. I wouldn't have thought tho that this would have such a big effect - its not just stumbling a bit - its like the ignition has been turned off! Then I back off the throttle a...

total loss of power at big throttle openings

Carbs have been cleaned out. Not set the float heights - but then it was all working before. I guess I had better do that next.

Thanks. I dont know if the needles are standard so may have to just replace them anyway. I thought standard main was 152.5? I am pretty sure this bike has been run on nitrous, having found the wiring and the threaded holes in the inlet stubs (now replaced). Its still very odd - as she was...

total loss of power at big throttle openings

Carbs are standard apart from 170 main jets (I guess they are Dynojet). None of that has been changed during the rebuild - and the problem wasn't there before. It has a K&N and a drilled airbox and Marving slashcuts - so I am assuming 170s are about right - but its what it was running with...

    Yes. All synced up nicely.

total loss of power at big throttle openings

Checked the airbox and inlet boots - seem fine. No sign of rubber cracking. Yes air filter in place - but what is the airbox Y? Well the fuel pump is making its usual noises when the ignition is switched on but I guess that doesn't necessarily mean its working properly - but it is at least...

total loss of power at big throttle openings

Plugs normal grey / brown. No sign of either soot or a weak mix - though not that surprising as the problem only appears at big throttle openings. Dont know about the float height - just looking in the Clymer manual - I guess I need a bit of clear tube to measure it. 15-17mm according to the...

total loss of power at big throttle openings

My 97 Vmax has just come out of rebuild. Had a lot of trouble with dirt in the carbs, so str4ipped them and used a rebuild kit - now got good smooth tickover, good pickup of power from low revs but.... at anything more than about 1/3 throttle opening the bike dies. Wont pull or accelerate and...

97 49-State import. Stage 1 tuned, lowered, Marving slash-cuts, 17/180 rear wheel, Vrod hydraulic controls, lots of polishing, just rebuilt and recoated engine. Spent twice what its worth - but its worth it to me!

    Petrol Fountain!

Thanks Steve - but at least this time I've sorted it. Spent way too much money - but have plans for stuff later in the year like USD forks - so will be pestering then!

Are you a new member? Come here and say hi!

New member from Cornwall, UK Hi! Iv'e had my '97 49-state full power import for just over a year and I'm just completing a rebuild (with the help of a friend). Discovered this site when having a few probs with the exhaust spraying fuel all over the workshop. Turned out to be a breather...

    Petrol Fountain!

Yeah - he also managed to drop a camshaft cap dowel down a spark plug hole and set the rear cylinder camshafts up with the front cylinder timing marks! Beginning to think I should have done it all myself! I did get a lot of useful advice (and components) from Exactrep - can't praise them enough!

    Petrol Fountain!

Not exactly. Fuel coming out of both silencers. Cos the breathers from the carbs were misconnected (too each other) the fuel was flooding into the engine. Didn't need to touch the float bowls etc. - apparently a blocked breather causes the 'fountain' effect (fuel was coming out the tops of the...

    Petrol Fountain!

Thanks for that. Actually the solution was a bit unexpected. The guy who was doing most of the rebuild for me had joined two carb breather pipes together at the spigot / bracket that sits up near the airbox. So the two right hand cvarbs could not breather - so the fuel pump was pumping fuel...

    Petrol Fountain!

Hi! New to the forum and I have a problem I think others have experienced. After a major rebuild I have petrol being pumped out of the exhausts - nearly set my workshop alight! So the carbs have now been stripped and cleaned, float levels checked and the floats and needles inspected. All back...
