I have had the dealer check my valve clearance but I forget how many miles ago since it was in 87. I dont have over 25K on her though. Im thinking about doing it again because I dont trust anyone, but wondering if its worth it. How does the clearance get smaller?:ummm:

Ok so finally (I know I've been putting this back waaaay too long!) here's a full 'how to' for doing your valves clearances, with the engine IN the bike. I agree that it would be a helluva lot easier to do this with the engine out, but it's not that easy for everyone to remove their motor...

Tried a search.... Looking to find out if anyone knows what is acceptable for the gears driving the oil pump as far as the freeplay on the shaft is concerned. The teeth are wearing perfectly, but when you rotate the gears on the shafts, they have excessive play on the shaft(s). 3 total. Is this...

It appears that on the shaft side of the swingarm there is a plastic cover that fills a hole in the swingarm closest to the tire. I think this will be able to be removed or modified for more tire clearance for those that feel they need a wider rear tire.

Is the tool called for in the manual for depressing the valves while setting valve clearance absolutely needed or is there a way to "poor boy" this job? Also; are the clearances called out in the book good ones? Any other advice would be appreciatted also. I've never done the valves on...
