Hello all,

well here it is...a friend of mine recently bought a max. He basically bought it because I brag about how great my 06 is, and that if he picked up an old one, he'd find that they are not much different.

Problem:

The bike cranks over really really really slow....it almost would sound like it's a battery near it's death....BUT...he replaced it with a Brand new Yuasa , and for shits and giggles we tried a NEW parts unlimited battery.

The problem is still there....it seems to run well and the bike doesn't just sit there and turn over and over and over. It only turns over once or twice, and luckily she fires up.....sometimes she doesn't though and I end up bump starting it.

Problem 2: Last night the temperature was about 4 deg Cel, and we decided to dress up warm and go for a ride, His Bike starting making " Popping " noises from the exhaust ( happens at a steady RPM and throughout the RPM range )
I pulled the plugs, gave him my spares, problem gone. I did notice however the previous owner had the air/fuel mixture plugs drilled out. I know the A/F mixture is factory set....but can someone tell me how many turns out they should be at stock setting???

I think I'm gonna have to pull the carbs and return them to stock settings and Jet sizes ( I did notice the plugs were alot lighter in colour than my own 06's plugs )

Thanks in advance for any help or suggestions!

I'm not sure where the idle screws are set from the factory... Maybe 2 turns out?? Mine are at 4 with a full exhaust.

A little more info on the bike would help too. Does it have pipes? Air filter type? Things like that...

The screws are supposedly set at the factory. If you look you will see each pipe has a port with a bolt in it for the sniffers.None should be the same.I set mine by how it is acting.Blip the throttle, does it fall right back down to idle?Does it fall below idle then come back up(rich)?Does it come partially back down then hover for awhile then fall back to idle(lean)?

If your 06 has tan to black plugs it is rich.Gray is closer to right.

Valve adjustment helps mixture screws to be more consistent. When your '06 hits 1500 miles check the valve adjustment. After that, it's every 26,000 miles.
