Hi.New member here and have been gaining knowledge from this forum.i picked up a 97 recently and have been having an issue with it running rich.Strong raw fuel smell at idle and horrible gas mileage.Tried cleaning carbs and changing plugs which helped somewhat.Mileage went from 10 to 22 mpg.Bike has kerker slipons and a uni filter but is stock else wise.Plugs fouled out[sooty not wet ]at about three hundred miles.thought prior owner might have jetted incorrectly but my mechanic called and said all jets are stock.i know its out of synch which will be addressed on carb reinstall.idles at 1000 rpm.Starts without choke even in 20 degree weather.once warmed up if i turn on choke[checking to see if it was stuck]it loses rpm.Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

Carb Synch is very important. It seems that it would have to be something to do with carbs if you are burning almost double the fuel. Hopefully once the floats, mixture and synch is done your mileage will get up to the correct numbers. My bike is stock and runs what seems to be perfectly and I get 36 mpg. Good luck.

I have the same issues. Found out recently that all the o-rings are deteriorating. l bought new rubber joints for between the carbs and intake they didn't look bad but were cracked all the way through behind the clamps. Going for a carb overhaul soon. My gas leak was coming from the A/F mix screw o-ring being bad. Good luck.
