2000 - only have 1st gear

i just purchased a 2000 vmax with 43,000 mies. however, the bike will only go into 1st gear. the bike will pop out of second gear as soon as i rev it. i purchased a used 2002 transmission on ebay. how should i check to see if the second transmission is good? any hints on the best way of changing the tranny out?

Are you able to skip second and go into third, fourth Etc?
Pull engine. split cases then look see what the damage is.
Mine it was the shift drum.

The problem is probably the gear shift segment. See this thread.

Gary, his 2000 already has the newer segment. The gear dogs are likely what's bad.
