I have a 92 with a possible bad starter will an 85 2 brush work so I can see if mines bad? I can get it for $20 off eBay but only have 4 hrs left

I can send you one for free to use for testing too (at least it would only be the price of shipping).

I'm just having a hard time believing I fried the starter from cranking it. I never had one electrical problem before I strapped it across the seat to trailer it when my shaft let go and now I have this freaking nightmare of electrical issues. Sean, the main computer, is that the TCI ? And does it regulate it getting spark or would it run like **** when it's going? I'm just not sure where to start replacing parts to find my problem. My brother in-law thinks he's Joe mechanic and swears it's the main computer or I guess TCI. He always assume's the worst and I think it's something simple or even stupid. I'm going over now to check first the ground on the starter and I checked that it's getting power to the starter with a test light. ( came on when I hit the start button) then maybe pull the starter to have tested or try to bench test. I'll let you know later what's up. Thanks, Ed

I can't see the TCI having anything to turn with the starter not turning over. You are hearing a "clicking" from the solenid which usually means that the solenoid is working.

If your getting a clicking noise but no turn over it could be a few things.

Most often its from low voltage.

Or, a bad connection. (saw this a month ago. drove 100 miles to rescue one of our crews cause the "truck had a bad starter". turned out the power cable was loose. Pushed the cable with a finger, had someone else turn the key and it fired right up) Check your wires for tightness and corrosion on the starter, and on the solenoid, battery, and main ground

Could be the starter itself

Could be the solenoid but kinda doubt it from your description.

Could be bad clearance on the stator cover but don't see this in your case as the issue popped up all of a sudden

I'm sure there are other possibilities I'm missing but based on what you are saying, solenoid clicking, 12V at the starter, its the best I can come up with.

Good luck

Thanks Mike, the starter issue was after the bike would not fire up, that's where the TCI comes in (maybe) but it ran perfect until I trailered it but then I was cranking it over and over with a jump on it then the starter quit.

Ok, 12.47 volts at the starter terminal. So I took off the radiator and removed the starter. Do you think I'll be able to tell what's wrong with it if I take it apart or should I take it somewhere to be checked out?

Try bench testing the starter. Keep in mind that the battery industry considers a full DISCHARGED battery when voltage is 12.43 with full charged at 12.60. Not saying that's the problem.

Wow, I never realized there was such a little difference maybe I'll get the battery checked as well. Watch a frickin junk battery be the cause of all this.. I'll ****.
