I have an "85" Max with a Dyna ignition and "04" R1 coil sticks. I haven't put any mileage on the bike yet because it is still in the process of becoming roadworthy. I recently read on this forum that the COP mod is damaging the Dyna 3000's. My question is, are there any coil sticks that have the same capacitance as the stock coils (2.4 - 3 Ohm's) that can replace the R1 coil sticks I just installed. I am not interested in frying an ignition unit and I don't have a spare. Any suggestions? I really like the COP mod and the bike starts and runs better than before.

No-one has an answer to this as of yet. From what we've found, all COPs have much lower resistance (typically 1/2) than the OEM coils.

If you are running a Dyna3000 you should stick with the OEM coils. If you wanna run COPs you need to get the original TCI unit.

There was talk of adding resistors inline with the COPs but it was worked out that mathematically, this would drop the voltage going to the coils and so negate any advantages provided by the COPs. Try at your own risk..

I guess I'll just go back to the original coils. I can't afford to fry the only TCI I have, and Dyna stopped manufacturing TCI's for the 85-89 Vmax!!! Does anyone have a source to an OEM TCI unit?

You can possibly buy new from Gary @ Mondak Motorsports (best price by a mile) but still expensive, otherwise your best bet is fleaBay. They don't come that often but there are usually some for sale from people parting bikes out. :confused2:
