I'm tryin to sell my Blazer and the service engine soon light is on. I went to Advance Auto and found that it's throwing the following code:

P0440 - Evap Emission Control System Malfunction

Anyone have a clue where I can start to fix this? I know it's not the gas cap. That's the first thing I always check.

Thanks Mark. That link shows all the possible parts that could be causing a problem. I think I might try to take it to the shop and run a smoke test on it. That might be able to pinpoint my problem.

I had a guy in Chicago (45 minutes from me) tell me that he has cash in hand and wants my Blazer sight-unseen. He also wants me to drive it up there to him. Sounds kinda fishy, eh? Knowing my luck, I'd get up there and then he's jack my Blazer while holding me at gunpoint. LOL

That sounds like one of the many scams going around. Be very careful and take several armed friends. I personally would not do it but it is SLIGHTLY possible it is legit. If the guy really wants it, he should come to you.

The number 1 most common cause for an evap code is a loose or defective fuel cap. Swap it with another one & be sure it's tight.

I would gladly go up there with my buddy and we'd BOTH be carrying. Unfortunately for those plans, Illinois has a law stating that you can't carry a weapon. So with an Indiana permit, if I go into Illinois while carrying and get caught, my ass is in jail.

The kid that bought my Shadow from me last week drove from the Northwest side of Chicago (1 hour and 45 minutes) to pick the bike up. I don't ever plan to drive TO someone to sell my truck. Call me old fashioned (I can't believe I'm using that phrase at only 24 years of age) but like y'all said, "If you want it, you can come get it!"

I'm almost positive that it's not the gas cap. The one that's on the truck is still the original one. It goes on nice and tight, still makes the clicking noises when I tighten it. It's not sloppy at all.

hey man i've been doing a lot of craigslisting lately and that sounds like a craigslist scam, altho slightly more legit b/c most of them want to ship overseas. i would make him call you first, or something.

As they say on the disclaimer 99% of scams can be avoided by dealing with only people that will come to you...

i wouldn't do it either w/out some definite interest. If you got a sec, if there was an email, post it up. i'll tell you if it looks like the scams i've seen.

If it was one of the scams involving a shipping company, I can assure you that I've had MORE than my share of those. I hate when I get an email from someone seemingly showing interest. I get all excited....then I see the shipping thing and my excitement disappears faster than a midget in a mosh pit.

This guy has been texting me. He did also say that I could call him, which I did.
The part that made me uneasy was when I asked him if he wanted me to text the VIN to him last night or this morning. His response was "Send it to me tonight, that way it'll keep me all hot and bothered about this thing until I can buy it."
I told him that I can meet him halfway and that's my final offer. He responded with "I really want to but ur not trying to give me a fair deal. The economy is bad and u not only wanna charge me full price but you want me to also travel for pickup."
I told him that I have no job (a blatant lie) and that I can't afford to come into Chicago to meet him. Now he's changing his tune and is willing to meet me just over the border in Indiana (where it's legal to carry a handgun with a permit :clapping:)
I have a friend who's a cop....I'm going to see if I can get him to come with also.

very sketchy... def bring ur cop friend.

how much would you be out if you go and it falls through?

Is anybody actually going to work this hard to steal an old S-10 Blazer???:ummm:

I mean.....shit.....carjacking is WAY quicker and easier than this convoluted process......

Just let the deal die if you are not willing to travel:confused2:

I would only be out whatever amount of gas I spent to get from here to the state line and back.

Sadly enough, there's plenty of people online that try any way they can to steal stuff. I'm willing to travel a bit. Just not to his home. I'm hopefully meeting him tomorrow, so keep your fingers crossed! I might have a local cop stake out the place in case the guy pulls a gun on me hehe:th_biggun:

EK,
If the guy really was interested in buying your vehicle he would come to you. I say he's one lazy bum who is going to try and seriously low ball you, hoping you'll take the deal because you traveled that far. And that's probably the best that'll happen.
I'd blow him off, he sounds too fishy to me.

Well, I ended up meeting him halfway. I was concerned, especially when the dickhead didn't want to meet me where we planned to meet. I felt like I was succumbing to his wishes. After talking to him, he is actually a nice guy. He just got burned really bad...bought a car that ended up being stolen and lost lots of money on the deal. So that's part of the reason why he was being a dick. It still makes no sense to me though why he wouldn't want to at least meet me halfway. Oh well. It's a done deal.

And I'm driving to Indy this weekend to hopefully pick up my next vehicle.

I had that same Engine code and I just reset it, took the cap off and put it back on...

A few websites said that it could just be bad gas, an odd pressure, etc - but not super worrysome - so clear it and see if it comes back.
