Backfiring in cold weather

Rode my bike 35 miles this morning (4:15am) to work and the bike was just getting off the cold C mark when I arrived. Very sluggish ride and when I had her up in neutral and reved her without the choke, she backfired and saw some blue flames out of the exhaust. I checked my plugs yesterday and they were a nice light brown as they should be. I run supertrapps wide open with all stock carbs.

Any suggestions why she was backfiring and sluggish? Last time I rode her, it was in the 60's and all was fine. Will see how she runs for the ride home later today.

Assume you mean Fahrenheit rather that the 6th decade of the 1900's?

Has it been running OK?

Could it have been cold and damp enough for the carbs to ice up?

Wasnt cold enough to ice up at all. I left work to figure out plain and simple what the cause was. I checked the plugs yesterday and came to notice that carb #1 boot wasnt on properly. Once I fixed that she was purring like a well fed kitten again....
