Hi

im about to clean my vacuum slide covers. I suppose they are made of aluminium. Over time there is sort of a film layer which has pealed off but not all of it. It still sits on the edges. Is there a Way to take the film off so i Can get the cover polished like the top of the cover has been. See picture

I used Napa 6802 paint stripper on both the scoops and caps before polishing, took off the plastic film just fine.

Mine are slightly grotty - one of the low priority tasks was to polish them but I manage to bag off ebay a set of shiny ones. I thought they were mirror polished but it looks like they are coated with a chrome mirror finnish which in a couple of places has bubbled up.

So yes, it appears the alloy covers are coated and as ^^^ says, paint stripper else rubbing down with wet n dry paper will remove it.

BTW aluminium alloy casting sometimes have slight discolouration so even if you get a mirror finish, it may be possible to see the colour differences (as I found out when polishing the scoops) - nothing major but not as even as the chromed coating,

Soda blasting is the quick and easy way to get a nice finish. I used a aircraft paint remover to remove the clear coat on scoops and it worked just fine. It was very quick.

Oven cleaner is also very effective at removing that clearcoat.
