Casing

Always wondered about something...
Does anyone know what year and why Yamaha altered the casing on the VMX12 with these ribs?

maybe when they altered for the screw type oil filter?
cost wise would be the best time...

I know they did a lot of internal changes in 1996 (when they went to the spin on filter) and I think that's when you will see what change. Someone with one of those years can chime in.
