I gotta repair some abs plastic. I've heard you can use typical abs cement for plumbing pipe. Also heard you can make your own glue, paste, or putty by mixing abs shavings and Acetone. My question is, can Methyl Amyl Ketone could be used in place of Acetone and produce the same results? Not to be confused with Methyl Ethyl Ketone. (i'm thinking) MAK is closely related to Acetone as far as chemical compositon but is a tad less harmful. Anyone know about this for sure.

I know the body shop my cousin works at has a plastic welder. I've even see guys with a soldering iron and some scrap plastic work some magic before. You might even be able to get away with a hot butter knife depending on how structuraly sound it needs to be? What are you working on?

Toying with the idea of filling in the reflectors on the plastic radiator covers. Just guessing that they are abs plastic, have not confirmed. I know it could be plastic welded but I don't want to buy one and I don't want to pay someone else either. I've got some abs lying around and i have some MAK and thought I may be able to mix the two to create a nice paste for working on this. For FREE:punk:

Mix, Fill, File, sand, sand, sand, and then maybe a decent looking rad cover with no reflectors or chrome strip, just black??

Oh, and if anyone has any spare radiator side covers there looking to get rid of, let me know. I would rather have sumpin' to practice on first. Callin all those that have cool chrome rad covers, give me your plastic junk please. LOL.

If I ever get around to any of this stuff and it works I'll let you know.

Thanks for the help so far!

I may have a crap side cover, I'll do some looking around. I know Morley has SS, chrome, or powder coated inserts for the aluminum pieces and maybe he has or can get metal inserts to replace the reflectors?

I filled my radiator side cover thin aluminum part with something called "Quiksteel". It comes in a putty like form and you just mold it into the cavity left when you remove the aluminum trim part. You have to work fast as it sets up quick once exposed to air. You can then file it and sand it into shape. Note that it's hard to sand once it hardens all the way, b/c it's steel-like.:biglaugh:
Here are some of my results (not perfect but it will do until I get my
SS covers):

Looks pretty good to me Brian... That what I'm hoping to do but want to fill the reflector also.

If someone could come up with an insert that covered the reflector and the strip on the radiator, I would by it if it were resonably priced. I would be happy with a piece of black plastic the just covered all this stuff. Remove the reflector and it could bolt though in that area.

I don't know why I even worry bout this stuff. I need to be saving my cash for an exhaust. It's been 6 months now since I got it (the bike)and I have the money. But, after realizing I have this much cash, + selling my 69 cutlass n parts + my tax refund, I may be looking at enough cash to pay off ONE of my loans. That really sucks to think of it like that. All this cash for a loan payoff. Ah well, if i do it, I could prolly save up for a exhaust again with the extra cash and then just keep saving to pay off more loans. Sorry, just hijacked my own thread.

Don't think twice about it... pay off the loan.... the Vmax will still be there. Hell, I'd loan you my Kerker until you had enough to buy another exhaust...

Here is what I would do... pay off that one loan. Then keep paying that same payment towards your other loans. Figure out how much you would have been paying on interest and I bet the numbers will surprize you. I think that is a problem today... people out of college get in over their heads too soon, and have a hard time digging themselves out later. I'm not saying this is you, I really don't know your situation so take it for what it is. If you go for 5 years without having much (saving your $$$ and paying off debt) you will be so much better off..... you'll be rolling in the dough down the road, plus it is one less thing to worry about!

Why is it every time I see them on a bad ass Max they are still stock and fugly or shine like the sun? I never understood why something that never looked good in the 1st place was 1st place on the mods list for many:confused2:
Just fill in the reflector and accent piece for $60 and call it good.

I've used a two part product called Plas-T-Pair for several minor crack repairs on my Venture Royale in the past. I also use it around the house on some cracked pinball plastics.

It works really well, but is somewhat expensive. I got it on-line at a place called MCM Electronics. Here is the link:

Probably too expensive for a larger fill such as you are planning.
