Chicken strips

Who knew? I always though chicken strips were strips of chicken, battered and deep fried. :confused2:

During the lunch stop at the Rally in the Ozarks, a couple guys, including Sean Morely, were walking around the parking lot examining the front tires of all the bikes present and comparing the chicken strips.

I was told the chicken strips on my bike were respectfully thin (I guess that's a good thing), but now I'm sitting here wondering who's bike had the fattest chicken strips -vs- who's had the skinniest.

Friend Darren later stated he had NO chicken strips whatsoever on his 09. I suspect he knew of them beforehand and simply applied a piece of sandpaper and some elbow grease to remove his.

Maybe Sean could post some of his thoughts on this? :ummm:

I heard about them thar chickin' strips, and I have but would like to get rid of them! I know you have to go fast and lean way over in corners to get rid of 'em!
I have the go fast part but just not enough corners (good ones anyways). I rode 200 miles a couple weekend ago and only 5-6 corners were even good enough to lay waste to my chicken strips.:confused2::damn angry::bang head:

Did Darren look at his strips after I rode it or before LOL! He was getting it worn down for sure! Don't remember the widest (slowest) but he was def up there with the thin crowd. I had about 1/16" left (rear tire shows thinner then the front most of the time).

Before I brought my bike back to stock height, I was occasionally accosted at events for the rather fat size of my chicken strips (we call em chicken wings around here). I would have to direct the observers line of sight to the leading lower edge of those damn Cobra pipes, which were dangerously close to worn clean through.

Not all tires are the same either. I have had 3 different brands on my Vmax now, ride it the same and the chicken strips are different on each of them.

Darren claimed he didn't have any on his 09. I didn't ask if that were because of your test ride. I did notice you were getting off to each side while riding it.

Wouldn't the strip depend entirely upon the exact tire model anyway, and thus, no fair comparison to be had between brands of tires?

After you guys clued me in on them, I made more effort to lean down more in the corners - whether or not I needed to, but then forgot all about re-checking them when I got back to the campground.

It was a REAL BLAST. I'm already counting days until next year. (I don't get to ride like that when it's just Shala and I tooling through the back country. Not for very long stints, leastways)

I agree. There was a bridgestone excedra 150 on the bike when I got it. The strips were very thin on that thing. After switching to the Shinko 170 last year, I noticed that they are wider. Then again, maybe I just ride like a pussy now compared to when I first got the bike :biglaugh:

I remember 3 years ago when I ran those same Arkansas roads on the stock Bridgestone bias ply and had about 1/8" chicken strip. Saturdays ride was 3/8" on the Metz 180 Radial. We were 2 up this time though.

Darren had used up pretty much all of the tires before I got on there lol! Just giving him shit.

At the end of the day, chicken strip size don't mean nothing to the enjoyment that each person has for the ride. I like to use much of the bikes potential which many don't do (either by choice or lack of experience). Ride where you feel comfortable but know that expanding your limits will make every day riding even safer and more enjoyable.

I have NO "chicken strips"!. Not even for the kids, they like chicken nuggets. lol. I will tell you, I have never had any "chicken stripes".
Heres a question for some of you who are getting down in the corners. How much grinding of the foot pegs do you do? I actually wore it threw to the bottom of the rubber on my last pair. I have wondered for a long time how many others also do this.
PS. Sometimes I grind peg just worming up the tires.

I have been trying to De strip my Dunlop's,and I can tell you with my lowered Max "The confidence level is just not there". "Looks like the closest I'll get to the edge is 1/4". Bill has it right. I never wear out out my "strips" here in Florida, land of the flat and straight road. Besides, the front never gets any wear being up in the air all the time !

mine werent too bad, we have mostly straight roads around here, the front tire is a metzeler and the outer edges just dont touch, the rear was worn all the way around though so i wouldnt even call it a chicken strip.

Chicken strips shouldn't even be discussed when talking about V Max's...:ummm: This is NOT a knee scraper , never was , never will be...and that's a good thing . Steering geometry in particular and the overall size in general does not lend itself to corner strafing . I went through all that machismo bullshit with my other 2 sportbikes and the squids that ride those things...:bang head:

THAT"S the reason I bought another Max , to ride mainly upright and comfortable . Anyone wanting to drag a knee is welcome to take a ride on my RC51...unk:...of course you drop it , you bought it...:rofl_200:
