Ok I am trying to figure what to do about all this splotchy aluminum on my 86.

Highly polished or painted seem like the most obvious answer, but I think I like a machined finish better. Or even the factory finish.

What has everyone done with theirs? Any good ideas?

1st Choice= Chrome
2nd Choice= Powder Coating.
3rd Choice= Leave it alone.

Polished aluminum is to much maitanence.

I love black chrome, till I see the bill! LOL

I dont know if I can make myself leave it alone. I have a bad case of 'mess-with-it-itus'

I was seriously eye-balling the powder coat page in the new Summit catalog

hmmmm they have a 'black chrome' powder coat color

I am located in Nashville, I can do powder coating. Send me a message what ya need powder coated..

They make powder in a mirror black which is very nice.. The best thing about powdercoating is very low maintanence, durable against uv, chemicals, impact, scratch resistant and durable.

Coating is a lot cheaper (the black chrome stuff doesn't look good in my opinion). We do offer the chroming in both regular and black chrome. The black chrome is 20% more. Chrome is about the most durable finish there is. Powdercoating is a strong second. Black chrome is not as durable but offers the different look for sure. Painting gives you a lot of options too.

Well, I am experimenting this weekend with a few different blasting options. I'll see if I get something worth clearcoating.

I managed someting liks a homegrown old airplane machining just using some 3m prep pads. I'll see what that looks like with clear.

I might run out to Summit and see if they display the different powdercoat finishes. That might help me make up my mind.

Maybe I can finally justify spending some bucks on a blast cabinet and coating oven.

Ya can never have enough toys!

I have plenty of the same issues.

In time, all of those bits will be replaced with chrome. In the "meantime" I amuse myself by fucking with them with 1000 grit wet sand. It makes my bike look weird but it beats the trashed clear coat, esp on the fork lowers.

Guys I have a pretty crappy scoop that I could send you if you wanted to play with it. That way you don't ruin a good one. I was going to do this myself, but found other things to keep me busy.

Let me know if you are interested.

Jeff
