When removing my flywheel I noticed that the end of the shaft is cracked a little. There are no threads on that part and when everything is back on it’s completely covered. I’m wondering how serious this crack is? And if I don’t fix it would that lead to other problems or would it be dangerous riding the bike?

Thanks

Wow, just on general principal, I'd expect that to be a no-no for continued use, but if Sean Morley says it's OK, you have to trust he's had experience. That's probably a good choice for remaining stock, no power-adders!

Common practice to stop a crack from propagating is to drill a small hole at the end of the crack, although I've just skimmed a paper that goes one step further by inserting a pin in the hole.

That would be difficult to do with the shaft in situ but had anyone tried it?

I have seen people simply cut it down until the crack is gone too. The flywheel is located via the taper and keyway anyway.

Interesting info.

I've hopefully not had to look in that area but what causes the shaft to spilt? Is there a tapered bolt that fits into the shaft?
