Im not sure if the bike has been doing this since I bought it or not but I noticed this recently. Second gear sounds crunchy when engaging at low RPMs. If I get first too 4k rpms and shift to second, its fine. Anything below that and 2nd sounds crunchy. Doesn't pop out of 2nd, the rest of the gears are fine.

Running valvoline 20w50 and the level is good.

Any thoughts?

Re: Cruncy gear engagement.

Is it rough just going into 2nd or is it a constant sound while in that gear?

It it doesn't pop out, and makes no noise while in gear, I wouldn't be too concerned about it.

Does it seem to go away as the bike warms up? 20-50 in current NY temps might be a bit thick...Yamaha calls for 10-40. With 10-40 in mine, it takes a good 10-15min on the highway(longer if just puttering around town) for the oil pressure to get to it's lowest, steady range, indicating the oil is finally at operating temp.

My old stick shift truck, and my buddy's wrangler with a 5spd both tend to shift kind of "crunchy" when it's really cold outside. Goes away once the trans warms up a bit from driving.

You know, that's a good point. The only reason I noticed yesterday was because we went out for a short ride and my visor was open for half of it. I could clearly hear everything the motor was doing and this really stood out. Next time I go out for a longer ride, I will have to listen for it and see if it changes.

Being the oil makes sense, especially if its not at operating temp. I thought the manual recommended 20w40, but I couldnt find that so I went with 50.
