I'd considered buying a subscription to the Cyclepedia service manual,
http://www.cyclepedia.com/yamaha-vmx1200-vmax-online-service-manual/
but then stumbled upon a version of it in the Amazon Kindle store
http://www.amazon.com/1985-2007-Yamaha-VMX1200-Service-ebook/dp/B009CH7ZS2/
As I find the images in the Haynes manual difficult to see when they're of the engine (black and white, and low resolution), I figured I'd give it a shot.
I'm quite impressed, on the whole. The layout is a bit odd at times, as the order can be a bit strange when you're used to a physical book, but it has the benefit of hyperlinks so you can jump around quite easily when it refers you to another section, or from the table of contents. The photos are generally pretty good quality and resolution (and zoomable, at least in the Kindle app on my tablet).
The section on carburetor disassembly may well pay for the manual on its own.
Being a Kindle "book" it is naturally DRM'd to prevent sharing, but I don't trust Amazon not to delete things I own without warning so I *cough* may have liberated it from those shackles.
