All,

As most here know I had my motor rebuilt over the winter by PCW to a 1428cc "stocker" with Sean's jet kit. Well today I decided that after ~1,000 miles (1,400km) to see what it had. Starting from a dead stop I ran it through 1-4th up to 9.5k rpm before upshifting and up to 8.5k rpm in 5th, by that point in time I was pushing 260kmh (150mph) and had twisties approaching at a damn fast rate of speed so I backed out. Lemme tell you that this SOB moves!!!!! Holding on was tough as it about pulls your arms off LOL.

I do have a question though. As I have never broken in a new motor, is it normal for the exhaust pitch, vibration, and throttle response to change as it breaks in? When I slowed out of my speed run the motor seemed smoother and more responsive, the vibration felt smoother for lack of a better term, and the exhaust pitch had changed a bit. Just wondering if this is a normal thing to happen or not. Any advice would be appreciated.

sure is

The break in procedure that I followed was recommended by PCW.

1) Do not spend an extended period of time at one RPM level. I would ride and change gears and throttle up or down to change the RPM on a fairly frequent basis.

2) Didn't take the engine above 8k RPM for any extended period. I would take it up to 8.5k RPM then back down to 4k on an increasing basis as my break in progressed.

3) Engine will be tight and not want to start hot for the first 750 miles or so. Plan to take a coffee break when fueling up. Mine was like this for the first 500 miles or so then would fire right up.

4) Changed my oil after 750 miles. Oil was still fairly clean looking, but wanted to follow directions LOL.

5) One thing I did to increase the cylinder pressures was to find a long hill, start at the bottom rolling in 2nd gear, run it hard up the hill. Wanted to put a load on the engine to seat the rings. Seems to have worked:biglaugh:

Hope this helps. My last recommendation would be to ask your motor builder how they recommend you break it in. They will have experience with what has worked for them in the past and you won't go wrong following their advice for the most part.

Cool, if you are doing the same engine and haven't decided if you are going to do anything with the carbs I will HIGHLY recommend Sean's kit. If you talk to John at PCW he will tell you the same thing. This engine loves carbs with this kit installed. Good luck, I hope your engine turns out as good as mine...

I notice my bike runs smoother and sounds a little different (better) after cruising on the interstate for extended miles. I would be interested in what kind of MPH this motor makes at the dragstrip. I think the next motor hopefully atleast a yr or so from now I will put bore it out and use some good forged pistons.
Do you have a local dragstrip up there in Canada?

Yep, Grand Bend dragstrip is really close, within 1.5hrs riding distance. My thoughts are to take it to the drag day in July. Should be good and broke in by then:biglaugh:. I would love to have someone with lots of experience take down the strip for me. Would be a true test of what it can do. Have to learn how to properly drag race the bike. Only issue with it last night was keeping the front wheel down and holding the f*ck on.

Clutch control clutch control..... I am expierementing now with blending sythetic oil mixed with non synthetic starting off with a pint of synthetic and the rest with non synthetic for a little more clutch control on the holeshot. I am shooting for 60ft times of 1.50's The best I can get now is 1.55's in the 60ft on a street tire.

Whats your thought on mixing Synthetic with non Synthetic at this ratio and up to a 1:4 ratio / 25% / .25

To be honest I haven't thought of doing that. Unfortunately my experience when it comes to oil properties is lacking so I would be quite reluctant to experiment:biglaugh:

I have read that before.... When I bought my RZ years ago. It was new, the guy ( dealer ) said to me. Don't baby it - ride it like you stole it. Needless to say it sucked for bit, no power, guttless. I was wondering what did I just buy ? this piece of shit is suppose to be quick ?. Then I think is was the second or third day, it started to come to life. When it did, would this little sucker go like snot. Now I know what he was talking about.... maybe it makes a difference to the bikes performance over the life of the engine ? Not sure. However, it was a two stroke not sure if the same applies here.

Not to get off topic - Jim - I went there last summer myself. I loved it .....I didn't see any bikes go. I did see a few when we were walking around but not going down the strip. I would love to see a Max turning a 1/4 mile. If you are serious about it, let me know so I can come to see your bike eat some pavement ! That would be very cool.

To anyone who has never see them !!!
GO SEE THEM ! It's worth the money.

The Nitro funny cars... there is nothing like'em. I did get to meet with Dale Creasey Jr and he signed my shirt. A very down to earth kind of guy and a awesome driver. All the best in 08 Dale. ( not that he's going to read it, but I just had to say it. )

He was telling me the tack is just for the mech's tuning - A driver has no time what so ever to look or worry. If it blows it blows. I guess not...never seen anything so fucking fast - unreal !

Getting back on track - let me know Jim, I'd like to be there. Ok. :eusa_dance:

Some may not like this but this has worked for me:

This is how I broke in my Max too! Changed the oil at 26 miles! I like this method and will do this to my new car too.:thumbs up: My Vmax was the most noticeably tight motor I have ever broken in! I was amazed what a change it made as I rode it. I actually noticed it after the IL VMOA ride-out having started it with about 150 miles on it and ended the weekend with over 300 on it made a hell of a difference.

I got a chance to ride my buddies 1500 tourmaster last night when I went over to get his old driveshaft for my bike (he stretched his)

I'd ridden it before but it wasn't broke in yet. He finally cajoled me into riding it and told me to give it all it had.

I'm freaking amazed, the front wheel will come up on it on a simple 2nd gear roll-on at 30-40 mph; that's with the venture rear end. it's not just a "little" faster than a normal Vmax, it's like night and day.

He's also running the PCW flatslides......

He broke his in exactly the way PCW recommended.

That's pretty much how this engine is too. First 3 gears can lift the front without even thinking about it. Talked to John at PCW today just to see what he thought and he was quite happy with how things are going with this engine. Told me he had another engine yesterday like mine he wanted to put Sean's jet kit in.... Going to take mine down to him while I am out and about this summer and throw it back on the dyno to see what the HP and torque get to after some serious mileage.
