Well, I have had my '93 Max for about 3 months now. It had sat outside for go knows how long before that. The usual r&r stuff to get her back on the road. All fluids flushed and changed, sight glasses replaced, carbs rebuilt, tank cleaned, and plugs changed blah, blah, blah. Anyway, I finally got to go for my first Vmax ride this evening. Nothing glorious, but a good rip around my country neighborhood. About 15 miles total. Way better than Viagra because now I have a boner that won't go away!:biglaugh: Really looking forward to some decent weather to get another taste.
 
Congratulations on being a rider who resurrected another one. I may have to start a thread about "Lazarus bikes." That's what I decided to call mine, though I haven't spent much time naming my rides. You don't have to spend a ton of $$$, just read threads on desired subjects here & have at it, and post your results. We like pictures-lots of pics!
 
That's the problem with sportbikes...your bait 'n tackle is smashed into the gas tank so there's no room to enjoy yourself. Not an issue on the Max.
 
We are bike brothers! I, too, purchased an outside sitting, exposed to Oklahoma weather, bike mid December. Got it out of A & A cycle, OKC, last week. The gas in the tank looked like orange juice! A 98 with 9900 miles on it. Have ridden it about 30 miles so far. Was windy and cold so it was less enjoyable. But it has great acceleration. Look forward to warmer weather!
 
Yes, much satisfaction from getting one back on the road. It can be expensive if you want to buy new replacement parts, some stuff needs to be bought new, others you can get by w/used. My underlying idea guiding that is,"will it be safe? " Sounds like a stupid thing to consider, "who wouldn't do that?" Cemeteries are filled w/people who didn't. "If in-doubt, throw it out!"

The deciding factor for me is, if it fails, from how much hurt would I have to recover? That will justify the extra $ right there.

Nothing like a VMax Boner!!!! Before you know it you will be waking up after a VMAx dream with one. It only gets disturbing when it starts turning the pages of the parts catalogs...
 
I agree, it can be expensive to resurrect one from the depths of the boneyard. I was lucky and got this one for a great price ($300), so I have very little in it as of now. Its a '93 with 11000 on the clock and I got ALL of the service records with it. Going to order some tires tomorrow. Pretty stoked about it.
 
New rubber on the way. Just ordered a 170 metzeler me880 from my local supplier. $138? Hell yeah! Got the buddy deal because he has known my dad forever and they both worked in the same bike shop when they first got started. Going to order a new front tire next payday. Coming right along. Next is going to be paint. I love black, but I want to make it different than just plain black. Going to talk to my paint guy next week and see if he has any ideas. And then, and then and then....

As a suggestion, tackle all the deferred maintenance or aging parts stuff before you go doing the cosmetics. Make sure the running gear is 100% before you spend $$ on appearance items like paint. Besides, it hurts more when the $30K Harley-Davidson loses repeatedly while madly shifting gears to try and stay-up w/a less-than perfect paint bike which just beats him w/roll-on power.

There is a local guy here who sells "rat-looking" bikes to ultra wealthy Middle East customers in places like Dubai & Saudi Arabia. They are full-on custom v-twins w/big engines, slammed to the ground, w/wide fenders almost coming in-contact w/the ground. He lets the bare sheetmetal develop a patina & then he clear-coats it. The color is on the wheels, he paints the entire wheel some Sesame Street bright color, of course the engine looks super-detailed. It's kinda a jarring contrast, seeing the rusty sheetmetal. But, he makes 1 or 2 a month & gets ~$60K for them from what i have heard from my friend who owns the shop where he buys his tires, batteries, & etc. Today I will find out the name of this builder & find some pics & post 'em later.
 
Sounds cool, and different. I grew up in my dad's H-D shop and had my hands in building many, many customs as well as rebuilding some "barn found bikes" and basket cases. I like H-D but even with great discounts I still couldn't bring myself to pay that much just to go that slow.

Believe me, nearly everything rubber has already been replaced, and all of the essentials have already been rebuilt (brakes, forks, etc.) I worked on it for 3 months before I even bothered to start it up because I knew that once I got it running I was going to want to ride it. So I saved the carbs for last and when I got it fired up and the carbs dialed in it was ready to ride.
