As the title suggests, i am looking to swap my 92 forks over for a 98 vmax set up. A friend of mine is about to put a R1 set up on his max. Is this a direct swap? Anything i need to know? I see a lot of talk about progressive springs. The fork seals are on their way out so was going to get the forks rebuilt. I don't want to lower it, and assume progressive do a standard height spring for the 98 fork?

When you change the calipers you also need the larger diameter rotors.

So the complete setup is:
- triple trees
- forks
- front calipers
- rotors

The rest swaps over - wheel, speedo drive, fender, I think the fork brace as well.

Progressive (the make) or progressively wound springs have a variable spring rate - soft to start with then the spring rate increases as the load on it goes up - and an (almost) a strait swap for the OE jobbies.

You will need to cut the spacer to get the static sag correct. Start by removing 15 mm and then re-measure the sag. You should get instructions on how to do this with the springs.
Using a pipe cutter will ensure a cut that is square to the centerline of the tube.

Progressively wound is a 'one size fits all' solution.
An alternative is (say) a Racetech single rate spring whose rate is linear. These are available in four different rates so can be matched to the weight of the rider.

Which is best?
I know folk who have both types of springs and all give positive feedback so I guess it's down to whatever floats your boat!

While you have the forks apart to do the seals consider fitting some emulators, which replace the (crude) Yameringha damping rod.
Have a look here and you should get the drift on what and where they go.

Thanks for all the info guys. Yes it is a direct swap, my mate has an aftermarket triple tree made by a mob in the UK. He also has R1 calipers and rotors, so would be a direct swap for me :D
Add to the list of mods ;)
