Hi folks

I'm currently using a YZF750 USD fork and YZF750 front wheel setup on my '89 Max.

Let's imagine that I wanted to continue to use the USD fork but install my old Vmax wheel on this YZF front fork. The front axle of the YZF750 is, however, a larger diameter than the Max's, so I'm wondering these:

1) Is it possible (and safe) to somehow modify the YZF forks to accept a smaller diameter axle? (Let us assume that the YZF axle and the Max axle are exactly the same length.)

2) Who would be a reliable machinist to do this?

Thanks all.

Id get a custom axle made. One end could be machined to clamp directly in the fork leg. The rest would be machined the OD of the Vmax axle. On the other end have a bushing made that is the right OD to clamp in the fork leg. The bushing ID could be threaded and the axle could be threaded to screw into the bushing. Have a nut welded onto the end of the bushing to preload the bearings. This is assuming the forks are setup with pinch bolts on both sides.

Custom wheel spacers will most likely be needed. If the YZF forks are wider than Vmax you could have the large end and bushing machined to eliminate the need for custom spacers.

Caliper alignment could be an issue. You need to check the distance between left and right rotors. You may need to shim the rotors or the calipers.

How about seeing if a bearing exists that has the OD of the vmax bearing, and the ID of the YZF axle? Like Mike said, there are other considerations, but its a start!

Exactly as Mike described... Another thing, check if the the speedo cable gear is similar or same to be able to fit everything accordingly

May have clearance issues installing the spacer tube inbetween bearings. And i don't know if you can do it with ball bearings. I have never seen a YZF front axle but if its similar to R1 its still a bit thicker than vmax one. Better, cheaper way is to do it like Mike said. Thats how i did it on my bike (R1 forks with gsxr front wheel and keeping speedo gear)

We've made a few custom axles before and could maybe make a few more of them. I have a YZF750R front end laying around here and wondered what all you used to fit it up?

No problem with that but require little bit of machining, maybe even forks itself too!

Thanks, folks!

Sean...I didn't really understand your question...you asked "what all you used to fit it up?" I don't understand what you're asking.

Thanks.

I have the exact same setup sitting in the shop. The stem looks like could be pressed out of the vmax triple and into the YZF triple. Not sure if you used custom triples or a modified set?

Sean

Gotcha, Sean.

I actually had Cycle One-Off make the triple tree. It's bad-***, pardon my french. Beefy as hell.

Speaking of which, can I hire you to machine down the YZF axle to accomodate the VMax wheel?

Thank you.

Elimax

Tom makes the axle too if you want to get ahold of him. Either way works.
