I have to say, that since owning this 85 max,i have been like a kid in a candy store, doing everything i can to get this bike running. Its been my dream to own one of these bikes, and the impatience ive had to hear it run has backfired in my face again.Long story short,...15 years of gunk in a gas tank.....doesnt come out easily,or cheaply. And if you happen to have one with gunk in the tank,do yourself a favor, and buy a NEW TANK!Or at least a used one in good condition. This next time will be the 4th time ive had the carbs off, cleaning junk out of them.....and i dont plan on doing it again after this.New tank on the way,new lines, two inline fuel filters, and a THOROUGH cleaning of these carbs one last time.Im ready to ride this beast, and have let my impatience get the best of me.Patience is indeed a virtue,...and in restoring,or rebuilding a V-Max....is obviously a neccesity!!...Lesson learned....now what did i do with my carb cleaner??????:bang head:

i've had great luck. taking the tank out. then media blasting the inside.
then i let it soak in a ultrasonic cleaner for about 12 hours. inside of tank looks like new.
and no problems since. but then i do have acsess to a machine shop.

You can spend days being frustrated or you can get a new tank & be done w/it by spending about the same as a pair of cheap tires. Ride or 'wrench,' your choice. My friend who is a Yamaha mechanic here in Pompano Beach told me when I was getting ready to get mine back on the road, "don't even think about trying to clean the old tank, just buy a new one & enjoy the riding!"

Are you purchasing a new factory tank, or having one resealed? Wouldn't the new factory tank eventually rust, or has the flaw been fixed?

I'm having the rust issue in mine, and change my filter every 1k. It helps, but it's just putting a bandaid on the problem for now.

I purchased a used tank off of a 2001,and the inside looks really good,No rust..and has already been lined. It just arrived today, and i got it in,and the bike is running. But im still having a problem with one of the carbs. As i said,i got the fresh tank on,put about a gallon and a half in it,and took a second gear blast down a secondary road across the street from my house(still waiting on my shifter to arrive). The bike was running great to start with....(75mph blast in second gear)...but on the blast back down the road to the house, after letting off and pulling in the clutch, she started spitting a little, and i do believe it has pulled a small piece of trash into one of the carbs again. But hopefully a quick cleaning will resolve this. Its just that i have been working on the bike so much since i bought it,the "shimmer" is starting to fade a bit, over having done so much to it in the last couple weeks. It just amazes me at how finicky the carbs are on these bikes.But,...if someone had left me sitting in a barn for 15years,im sure id have a bad attitude as well.:damn angry: Im not giving up on "the beast",but i think im gonna take a break for a few days and try to regain my composure and sanity before doing anymore wrenching.

Mine sat for 15 years with about a gallon of gas in it,and i wont even try to explain what shape the inside of the tank was in.I bought a factory tank off of a 2001 that was already lined. And if i had to do it over again,i would have definetly went this route,or bought a new tank to begin with. Its just too much of a pain in the ass to keep pulling those carbs and tearing them down, cleaning them, syncing them, etc.
