Hi all, glad i found this site it looks full of info .
I have a question to all you v max heads.
I am going to look at a 1986 model yamaha fzx 700s on monday, they call this the baby v max for obvious reasons.
ALL i know is that it has had 7 owners from new, was registered in uk in 1998 but it is a 86 model when new in usa.
miles is around the 52k mark
condition looks real good but dont know close up till i see her in the flesh.
it has no t+t at the moment but is going for a sensible price.
What should i look out for when i go and see her, test ride her ect?
IS there anything specific i should look for ?
look forward to all your replys.
All the best welshlad..
ps i appologise if this site is not about the said bike.

Fazers are great little bikes, ride nice, turn quick, and accelerate good for a 700cc of their day.

I've riden several and have a couple of friends that use to own them. Like all bikes, if it has been taken care of...you're good to go.

Hi Welshlad and welcome!:welcome_sign:

One of the members here, Shawn Kloker, has a Fazer (fzx 700) and just finished rebuilding it and I believe is racing it. You can see it in his "Garage" here http://www.vmaxforum.net/vbgarage.php?do=view&id=6 . He would probably have the most knowledge on these bikes so drop him a PM and he should be able to help you out.

I atually have 2 86's.One with 12k miles and the other with 7k.One is a parts bike only though.

Yea, Shawn got the one Luana drives from me. It was my ex's bike and ran consistent 12.40's at the track and it was completely bone stock. I have another one with stock exhaust but dynojet jet kit and it is much faster and would not surprise me if it wasn't a high 11 bike (haven't run it at the track yet).

Another one I built (one of my shop helpers) has an FZR1000 engine in it that is heavily worked over. So far his best time on it has been 10.11 @ 132 at the track. We are getting ready to put on some Keihin 41 flatslides on it (just came in today) and have a new sprocket set on order to get it well into the 9's.

At the last dyno it made 132RWHP and almost 80 lb's of torque! Imagine how fun this thing is since it weighed 450lbs on the track scale last month and my vmax was 580 lbs! Not only that but the kid has me beat by 50lbs lighter weight too!

I've got another Fazer I will be building late this season too. The engine for it made 196RWHP with NOS and should be an absolute terror on the street.

However, to answer your question - The engines are nearly bullet proof so not much issues to look for. If the bike is clean enough then buy it. Over here a nice clean low mile version will bring $2000 any day of the week on ebay. Higher mile units won't bring as much though they are not worn out by any means.

I can get you in touch with one of the largest Fazer groups if you want. Keep in mind that even though they imported the Fazer for only 2 years in the U.S. (86 and 87) they were made for years (deep into the 90's) for the rest of the world. The U.S. models were 700cc engines while the rest of them were 750 models (made a bit more power and were also called the "FZX").
