has anyone fitted a gear indicator to your bike?
I bought one but none of the plugs match up.
 
We've adapted over a few over the years on the Gen 1's using the Venture sending unit and a simple indicator. I probably have a few of the sending units on hand still. See examples. It will require custom wiring of course.

Perhaps I'm missing the point but I don't understand one would need to know what gear the bike is in. You are either cruising, or needing to change up or down. I would hope we would be able to work that out without an indicator.
What I do appreciate is knowing when you are in 5th thus not trying to go for sixth.
A simple fifth gear indicator can perform this and avoid the need for more extensive wiring.

My suggestion is attached. Hve this on mine and can confirm it works.

One of my projects that never got off the ground was to fit a 7 segment LED indicator for gear but I did not think there was enough room below the blanked off lamp.

I wad planning to use a microcontroller to calculate the gear from engine rpm (tacho signal) and reed switch in the speedo head.


Maybe one day.....
 
I don’t need an indicator to know we all need a 6th gear…..come up with that solution and hit me up.
Yes,I agree. The fist gen does need a 6th gear for cruising. Really needed it even worse on the interstate. I did up my rear tire size on my stock wheel and that did seem to help some at highway speeds. It lowered my RPM some.

My 1982 Virago was horrible with RPMs at highway speeds and when I moved to New Mexico, got even worse cause the interstate speed was 75. The Seca has an 18" wheel over the Viragos 16" wheel. That alone dropped my RPM by 500. Research of the time showed that all the differentials of those era bikes were the same. Later found that some had different gearing.

We have an overdrive 5th gear option. That is a 23% reduction compared to stock so about the same feel as 7th gear. Plus we can even swap enture trans ratios around from other models and have worked out the parts required to do that. There is a Venture Star set that works great if you have a bigger engine setup to pull through the different ratio 1st and 2nd. That setup pulls awesome with a big bore engine and ends up with a 15% reduction compared to the stock Vmax.

I've been running a (83?) Venture rear diff for over 100k km's and with ~11% reduction across stock gearset, it's about as close to 6th as I can get. Swap is easy...everything pretty much bolt-in. Before someone jumps up/down about how I've changed the bike 'too much', I already know that it also affects 1st gear...which I would rapidly shift up from anyways and the bike is still launchable with the overall taller gearing
