Its already happening in the Radio Controlled Hobby World.
I have a nitro powered 1/10 scale road race car modified for a big block. This car I built can run 83MPH.
Each year they have a competition for land speed record in RC. Anything goes electric or gas / nitro methanol fuel. So far the past 4 yrs electric has taken this title I believe its over 140MPH !!

With the new technolgy of LI-PO batteries and brushless motors the performance is incredible. I would say in about 10 yrs electric will be quicker and faster then gas combustion engines
