Just saw it in 3D, cinematography is spectacular. For being centered on one person-Bullock- for most of the movie, and alternating between 1st and third-person viewpoints, it's like Robinson Crusoe meets Cast Away. I see a lot of people compare it to 2001 but that really isn't the case, not at-all. Not to me.
Incidentally, today 56 years-ago, the USA got a Russian 'moon,' as Sputnik was launched. Man, did that kick-off an intense technology race, probably bigger than either the race to create a fission device, or its 'replacement,' a fusion device. I was a kid, but I recall going outside to see Sputnik pass-overhead, a trajectory you had to-assume the Russians chose to serve as a frequent, irritating reminder of their technological superiority in space.
The same day, we launched Leave It to Beaver.
I have to think Sandra Bullock will get an Academy Award nomination. Another will likely go for cinematography, and that should be a shoo-in.
If you like science fiction, this is actually contemporary fiction about science, and it's very entertaining. And go watch it and see if you can identify the voice of Mission Control-Houston. Do yourself a favor, and don't read or listen to reports of the movie, and see if you can guess who it is.
"I have a bad feeling about this mission."-George Clooney, as Matt Kowalski
