Guess I should have looked

I changed the oil and filter on my 86 Max today and when I got finished I found a spring and rubber washer in the drain pan. OOPs where the hell did they come from? I went online and looked at the exploded view on Bike Bandit and best I can tell the spring goes over the bolt then the rubber washer then the filter then it goes on the bike. Is this right? Also does it matter where the 2 ears are on the cover? I have them down right now.
