I seen an article just a while back where someone done a "washer swap" and installed a wider rear tire, I'm wanting to check into it again, I want a wider rear tire as well as my friend on his bike. Can someone assist me? Thanks, Steve Kent

I've got one set of Carrozzeria's on hand that you can install up to a 200 on. It's not going to be a cheap set though!

170 Tourmaster on my '85. Probably have used at least 4 of these over the years. Never needed the washer swap.

Guess thats what I'll try is the 170 Tourmaster and try without washer swap, thanks, Steve Kent

This explains what to do.

Not sure if it will help you 'have' your friend in his bike though.....

A 170/80-15 is the widest tire recommended on the stock rear rim.
As stated above many 170/80-15's don't require the washer swap but a few do.
Personally I ride about 80% of the time on twisty, hilly back country roads and I like the feel of the 150/90-15 better than the 170/80-15.
I tried a Metzeler 170 and a Shinko 170 and IMO the 150 handles better in the curves.
The 170 looks better and I'm sure if you ride mostly straight roads or haven't spent years riding on the stock 150 in the curves you may not even notice a difference with the 170 vs. the 150.
