I am curious to see what the more common repairs are to our VMaxes. I'm asking that you give the year and mileage of your bike and the known repairs performed either by you or the previous owner(s). Modifications done electively don't count unless they are done because something broke or needed repairing, then please list them. Performance enhancements, the same. I'm looking for things that broke or needed repair.

And, of course, please do not list routine maintenance and consumables such as brakes, any fluids, batteries, etc.

I'll go first.

Norm, I love to talk Vmax but have had too many and made so many repairs that I honestly think it might be easier to list what has never broken down on me and needed fixed to run. I will enjoy reading everbody else's posts though!

1992 purchased 4/ 07 with 4300 miles
2009 Fork seals replace while lowering w/ progressive kit/ stock battery replaced w/ Odyssey.
2010 replaced 2nd gear/ DD clutch/ carb and air box rubber boots.
Searching through all my paperwork since I've owned Redbone I was surprised of what little work I HAD to do to it vs. what I actually did. I guess I shouldn't have really been surprised though.
Damn furry vermin of a mod monkey anyways!

-Leaking fork seals replaced, progressive springs @ 12,000 miles

-Weak coils, did COP mod @ 10,000 miles

-Clutch slave leaking, fix in process

Everything else is maintenance or mods. I think I've got off easy (knock on wood)!

2000 vmax bought in Aug. 2011 with 16,000 mi. Replaced fork seals at roughly 19,000 mi. And I was having charging problems and cut out the connector from the r/r and but spliced it back together around 20,000 mi. No more problems since. Now have 22,000 mi.

Bought new 1985. Mileages are approximate...

5,000 miles. Broken speedometer cable.

12,000 miles. Muffler showed a bit of bubbling under the chrome at the end of the pipe. Dealer replaced muffler unit.

20,000 miles. Seat covering split. Replaced with a new one dealer supplied.

35,000 miles. R/R unit failed. Replaced with stock.

40,000 miles. Time for a clutch.

Somewhere around this mileage the header pipe busted loose, causing a horrendous rattle. Replaced with used.

50,000 miles. Replaced all 3 rotors with good used ones. I was pulling a trailer at the time, and thought they were getting a bit thin. There was noticable wear on them.

Somewhere around this time, the second seat cover fell apart, and I replaced with a Corbin.

60,000 miles. Stator failure. Replaced with stock, and soldered the 3 wires.

60,000 miles. Replaced carb diaphragms. & steering head bearings.

95,000 miles. Replaced swing arm bearings.

105,000 miles. Approximate mileage for new style R/R unit like the modern bikes have.

120,000 miles. Went through the whole bike and came up with these things that were in need of looking after: Replaced fork seals (they were bad for a good long time, though!). Replaced front wheel bearings. (Back in 1985, Yamaha had a recall on the front wheel bearings. My bike was not one of the bad ones, but the dealer gave me a set of bearings "for later". (They stayed in the box till I had them put in at this time).

About the same time. Got a VBoost controller to replace the one that had failed years earlier (The bike was fast enough for me even with the VBoost disabled) First ride after repairing VBoost, I broke another speedo cable. COPS.

Also, I had the Corbin recovered. Eliminated that stupid flap to refuel. I just lift the seat off now to fill the tank.

Last year. Stainless steel brake lines.

"Consumables"
About 6 batteries.
A number of sets of brake pads.
A couple air cleaner elements
2000 mile oil/filter changes.
Lost count of the tire changes!
