This is my chaindrive motor that was built from bits and pieces.
Our apprentice bought a Vmax with a busted motor ie. con-rod bearing that allowed the piston to travel into the vlaves as I documented in the chaindrive thread among other damage.
He bought another engine and all is well and I kept what was salvageable from the blown engine,
Fast forward> I bought an accident damaged XVZ1300 2008 engine from Ebay for about $250 only 3k miles but the bottom case was cracked soooo I have used the top case ,crank , pstons etc etc from the XVZ but the bottom case from the Vmax including the trans etc. I bought 4 new valves and lapped them in and have no leaks. l machined 1 mm from the deck height to raise compression and have reground cams and need to make some shims to suit. So obviously I'm using the Vmax heads. The engine covers are different on the XVZ engines and I got a chrome stator and chrome clutch cover for abut $60 each from Ebay. The other covers I'm using from Vmax with a slight modification to the middle drive gear cover.
I like it, a little different from the everyday max and being 1300, chain drive and cams hopefully it will pull along nicely. All in I haven't really thrown much money into it .
The pictures are only from my phone camera and only in mock up position. I'll get some better pictures later on.

Mixing cases from different engines eh? I don't think you would find many engine builders that would recommend that.

I'm assuming that you checked that the bores for the shaft bearings line up without any misalignment between the top and bottom halves of the cases?

Given that you have gone ahead with the build then they must do which just goes to show that the normally perceived wisdom isn't always right.

+1 Steve,
I have been involved with many V-max engine rebuilds & mixing of cases is not the way to go. I know of one guy that did decide to mixes his cases due to a broken motor mount & the only way he was able to get somewhat of a good alignment & bearing fits was to remove the doll-pin that is used to set the upper & lower cases. To the best of my knowledge he is still up & running today. Maybe we can call it lucky!

I have heard that done a few times though like Damon I don't recommend it. But, you've not got a ton to lose so might as well give it a go. Would love to see how your chain drive setup works out and maybe be able to source that for local guys here!

Cool chain drive the only mod i Regret not doing when i did my Pcw 1500. If you dyno please post some #s
