Just picked up a 1986 with 17K on it. It is difficult to find neutral. I've tried it while rolling , at a stop, haven't tried it with engine stopped yet.

No problems with shifting or popping out of gear.

Is this a symptom of something serious?

Thanks

I find my 06 shifts into neutral best, when it has good clean oil in it.
But it's always been a little tricky getting used to finding neutral on mine too.

You really have to get used to that half pull on it.
After 13,600 miles I'm getting to where I usually only pass it once or twice now. As to previously 6 7 8... times. LOL!

Make sure your shifter lever isn't set too low....this will cause it to bind. Another possibility is your clutch is sticking a bit. Make sure your clutch fluid is clean and the lines are properly bled. When clutch lever is pulled and you shift into first does it lurch forward? Make sure you idle is set to at least 1000 rpms. Too low will cause the shifting to be a little more difficult.

Thanks for the replies, I'll check the lurch when putting it in gear.

If a bike does lurch a bit when shifting into first :whistlin:
what is the indicativce of :confused2:
Cheers

Idle is fine, guess I will bleed the clutch and see what happens.

Does it only do this when it is cold, like sitting overnight? I always pump my clutch 3 or 4 times before trying to put it into first. The clutch plates stick together real tight when its cold.Kinda lurches a foot or two before they break loose.

And here I figured mine lurched when shifting into 1st was because I only weigh 128lbs.

Wouldn't any air work it's way back UP to the master reservoir and bleed out there?

I get a heavy clunk, no lurch. If I give a couple of extra revs when trying to find neutral, it's much easier. Also like 82ndCowboy says practice makes perfect.
