Hi there again guys, as on my post below my wheel is still shaking, but now as of tonight I got another problem. Just out of curiosity I opened up the air intake. Well that's when I realized that 4 rubber pieces covering the carbs were not connected at all to it. I just wonder how much of a dirt is in them by now. It's a 1997 Vmax, rides good except for front end shaking and now this. Everything was and still is dirty. After thinking how to put this together for some time I finally got it. It was not easy but it's on and tight too. Now my question would be, how dangerous for the engine this is ,and how easy is it to clean carbs myself. I never did it before, do I need a professional or just myself? I like fixing stuff on my own. I've seen somebody's post about cleaning but there is still some insecurity about it. Barney's charge here in Pinellas county $1200 for it, another place $490. A bit too much for me now, they say it will take 8 hours for a job. Thanx for inputs, great forum BTW.

If you have some hand tools and common sense it can be done by the average joe. Just take your time and read up before you dig in. All the info you need to do it can be found here on the site in the carb section. Thanks to Mark, Sean and Naughty G, we all have the info at our fingertips! I'm a big believer in not fixing things that aren't broke. If the bike runs fine, I wouldn't bother. Drain the bowls and check the fuel in your container. If its clean keep riding.

The front wheel could be a few things. Worn or poorly adjusted steering stem bearings, and/or front tire cupped or wearing poorly, and/or wheel out of balance. There are other possible causes but these are the most probable. Check for any loose fasters too.

Good Luck and Congrats!!

Yeah, like he said^on the carbs! :biglaugh:

There are two kinds of wobbles, a decelleration wobble when you're backing down, around 40 or 35 it begins to shake....and a hi-speed wobble which kicks in about 120 or in that area....which one do you have?

Steelfish, you live very close to a VMOA member CaptKyle that hosts a Tech Day (technical day) at his place just north of you. (Oldsmar) That would be PERFECT for a newbie like yourself to showup, get your hands dirty, meet some fellow Maxxers and learn all kinds of shi-tuff about your acquisition. Check here or at the VMOA.net site for the next one. I am south of you an hour or so. Patmax.:punk:

I should be back in Tampa some time next month, and can definitely help ya with the carb cleaning. All my tools and my bike are there. So can CaptainKyle, although he's out of town too I think as his dad isn't well. Also as mentioned - a tech day would take care of it all, but we don't know when the next one will be.

We can check your front tire and steering bearings at the same time - real easy and then you can decide what to do. A new tire may do wonders. A bearings adjustment will most probably help, but it's a GREAT idea to take a good look at them as if they're worn it's downright suicidal at high speeds. Take it from me, you don't want to experience the 'wobble' at 115+mph..

Damn, you guys are really great. I've never seen so much help on any forum before. It's just unbelievable. Yes Tech day sounds like a great idea. As for carbs on my bike, guy from St. Pete shop told me that they don't sound good, probably meaning dirty. As for my bike, it rides very good. I added SeaFoam the other day in gas tank, after two days white smoke came out for a couple minutes. It idles even better now. I still have a lot of power. My concern was the dirt in carbs. Nothing is bad so far on the engine part, just my front wheel. I gotta admit, this is one helluva bike, love it. How do I find about tech day? Thanx to all for your replies

you'll see more posts on techday...

good luck with the shake, u'll get her sorted..

if it runs good, i probably wouldn't mess with the carbs, they can be a pain, but if u wanna clean them NG will help ya out for sure. if that didn't work out for some reason or another u may wanna talk to Sean Morley[one2dmax] about cleaning them. I wouldn't trust too many otherpeople with my carbs.
