The Vmax snowmobiles were all 2 strokes, and came in 2, 3 and even a 4 cylinder variety. To date the Vmax4 is the only 4 cylinder 2 stroke snowmobile ever produced. Didn't sell real well, since it really wasn't much faster than the triples and chugged gas with a passion.
If you want a fast, fun snowmobile, look no further than the Yamaha 4 strokes. My '05 RX-Warrior is powered by a slightly altered R1 engine, rated at 145hp feeding a 136" track. On good snow conditions when it hooks up, its has nearly the pull as the Vmax. I've seen 128mph on the dream-o-meter, which is probably more like 115 actual. Plus it's pretty unanimous that Yamaha builds the best engines on the snow, they've been known to go 30k+, which is a LOT for a sled. Most 2-strokes need a rebuild by 10k, less if it's ridden hard.
I test rode a 2009 Apex last winter, which is still essentially a R1 engine, but now with FI and some more tweaks bringing it to 150hp. That thing was an absolute animal. As close to a Vmax for the snow as you can get. Rode the Cat turbo also, and really wasn't that impressed. Throttle response was boggy in the mid and high range, and the front suspension sucked ass. where the Yamaha has instant pull at any RPM. And for having a 25hp advantage, I still thought it was slower at least in acceleration.
